This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ...which as a student in Erfurt he knew was held in high esteem and which as a monk and priest he was obliged by rule to have known, studied and recited for years? To maintain that Luther knew not and could not find any Bibles except the one he was supposed to discover as librarian of his convent, is to brand him as a liar. It is interesting now to recall what Zwingle, the Swiss Reformer, who made many false boasts for himself, once said to Luther: "You are unjust in putting forth the boastful claim of dragging the Bible from beneath the dusty benches of the schools. You forget that we have gained a knowledge of the Scriptures through the translations of others. You are very well aware, with all your blustering, that previously to your time there existed a host of scholars who, in Biblical knowledge and philological attainments, were incomparably your superiors." (Alzog. Ill, 49.) The Catholic Church reigned supreme for more than fifteen hundred years before Luther introduced his special conception of the Bible. During this long period the Church had it in her power to do with the Bible what she pleased. Had she hated it she could easily have dragged into the light of day every copy then in existence, and were she so disposed could have destroyed and reduced all to ashes. But did she do this? The truth is that the Catholic Church, ruled by the Pope, instead of getting rid of the Bible, saved, preserved, and guarded it all through the centuries from its institution and formation into one volume in 397 A. D., to the sixteenth century. All along she employed her clergy to multiply it in the Greek and Hebrew languages, and to translate it into Latin and the common tongues of every Christian nation that all might read and learn and know...

Excerpt from Luther and Lutherdom, Vol. 1 of 1: From Original Sources It still remains only too true that, on the side of Protes tants, in their instructions and elsewhere, Catholic doctrine and establishments are systematically distorted. It was this melancholy fact that lent to my pen the sharp tone which was taken so ill in my preface. In these prudish times, however, it is worth while sparing the weak nerves of many a reader, all the more so as the facts anyhow speak loudly enough of them selves. The very reception oi my book again confirms, in classic fashion, the uncritical, undiscriminating partisanship of by far the greater part of our opponents. Excerpt from Theology of Luther in Its Historical Development and Inner Harmony, Vol. 1 of 2 The life of Martin Luther was one so unique in its personal characteristics and so full of dramatic interest that 'we are prone to rest content with the contemplation of its outward aspects, and too seldom stop to trace the course of the full, deep current of religious thought that lay beneath it. Here and there in his career certain definite religious convictions are recognized by all as controlling his conduct and prompting his fearless utterances. The world knows what were the truths for which he stood at Worms and Marburg. But it is the task of the painstaking scholar to note the germination of the great initial conceptions which gave direction and form to all the subsequent thought of the Reformer, and to mark the natural stages of development by which this seed - thought grew until it covered the whole field of theological truth. Excerpt from Martin Luther, Vol. 2: His Life and Work The verdict of the Leipzig wiseacres, though endorsed extensively enough by priestly conclaves and University senates, was reversed by the public Opinion of Europe. Luther, and not Eck, proved to have spoken the word that the world was listening for. Few cared to note the details of the argumentative conflict; but Europe beheld in Eck the champion of Papal authority and tradition, and in Luther the advocate of freedom and the Bible. More distinctly than before, Luther was made con spicuous as the uplifter of a banner against Rome. European society had for many years been becoming alienated from, and suspicious of, the Roman Church. That vague, half-defined, latent sense of weariness with one order' of things and longing for another, which works below the social surface, and is the mightiest of forces in preparing the way for revolution, was in league with Luther. In these circumstances, the counsel of Ahitophel for the Papacy would have been to impose upon its friends a policy of silence. Excerpt from Luther by a Lutheran, or a Full Length Portrait of Doctor Martin Luther: Being a Comprehensive, Though Condensed and Correct History of the Life and Stupendous Achievements of the Great Reformer, From the Cradle to the Grave IN presenting the Life of Luther to the American public, it would seem to be proper to give a few reasons for such an um dertaking at this time. It may be asked and no doubt will be, have we not Lives of Luther in abundance? Why then add another to the list It is true we have d'aubigne, and Milner, and Scott, and Bowers, and Tischer, and a number of inferior works; but it is a remarkable fact, that we have not in the Eng lish language a single life of Luther, that pretends to give any thing like a correct and extensive account of the great Reform er, written by a Lutheran. And yet we humbly conceive that the gre atreformer ought to be fairly represented in English by a member of the church that bears his illustrious name. There are thousands and tens of thousands of as warm-hearted and whole-souled Lutherans in this country as ever lived, who are not able to read the rich and copious language of their fathers; and ought they not to be supplied with a correct and impartial life of the illustrious Reformer? Far be it from us to accuse those good and learned men of other churches who have writ ten the life of Luther, of doing him injustice, or intentionally misrepresenting him, but in most of such works we often see a parsimony of praise, which actually amounts to unintentional misrepresentation. This we have endeavored to correct in the following pages, and how well we may have succeeded, the ln telligent reader will be able to? Judge after a careful perusal.
