Excerpt from The Evolution of Educational Theory The first and the most natural consequence of a historical survey of philosophic thought is to induce despair of philosophy. It presents us with the spectacle of the human mind endeavouring to understand the central facts of experience, and failing, in every age and every country, to give an indisputable or final explanation of any one of them. The only reward of historical research in this department seems to be a collection of inconclusive and mutually inconsistent opinions Inflated into theories of a reality which exceeds mans utmost powers to comprehend. Excerpt from A d104-Book in the Principles of Education In the following pages I have endeavored to present in a systematic way the outlines of a theory of education from the point of view of evolution. The evolutionary conception has been applied to educational theory more or less consistently by all writers on the subject since the time of Froebel. The development of more and more scientific knowledge in regard to the history of life, of mind, and of society has, however, made possible constant reconstruction of the general principles, in terms of which the process of evolution through education is to be conceived. I have tried to draw into a unified scheme what seem to me the essential features of current thought on this subject to-day. To accomplish this result in anything like an adequate manner, and at the same time make those practical applications of principles which a book on the "Principles of Education" may be expected to offer, it has been necessary to give to certain fundamental conceptions a very condensed and, I fear, somewhat abstract treatment. Such is especially the case in the chapter on "Conscious Learning," which, had space been clearly available, I should gladly have expanded by the addition of more illustration. In the chapter on "Readjustment, its Meaning, Conditions, and Methods," I have given the essential features of my theory of evolution. To the schoolman interested primarily in practice this may seem like a somewhat formidable introduction to so practical a subject as the Principles of Education should be. Excerpt from History of Education: A Survey of the Development of Educational Theory and Practice in Ancient, Medieval and Modern Times The Catholic University Pedagogical Series as now projected will include separate volumes on the history of ancient, medieval, and modern education respectively. This book is intended to be an introduction to the Series, and, as such, aims to present a survey of the development of educational theory and practice from ancient times to the present. It aspires to be a practical text-book in the history of education, and While necessarily brief, it is, the author hopes, sufficiently expansive on important movements and details to afford that general View of educational advance and development Which is imperative for an understanding of current problems. Its Special aim is to meet the needs of the Catholic teacher or student, to give him along With a knowledge of educational history that sympathy With Christian institutions and men, especially in the llfiddle Ages, which a common faith and spiritual heritage demand, and which contemporary histories of education in English do not tend to foster, and also to enable him properly to estimate those educators and schools Whose theological and philosophical tenets are at variance With the teachings of the Church. A general bibliography and Special bibliographies for each chapter have been provided, so that, in addition to the references accompanying the text, there will be afforded ample material for collateral reading. Excerpt from A Guide to the History of Education But England compares poorly in this respect with some of the neighbouring lands. Our school and college histories are numerous enough; but they too easily drop to the level of anecdote, personal or architectural, and too often remain silent on matters which would indicate advance, or the reverse, in educational theory or practice. In fact, much spade-work must be done before we can hope to possess a conspectus of what English schools have attempted or accomplished between the early medieval period and the present day. When that work is surveyed in the light of con temporary life, social, political, and economic, we shall be in a position to generalize about the English theory of education. Excerpt from A Brief History of Education: A History of the Practice and Progress and Organization of Education The present volume is an abridgment and condensation of my History of Education, issued in 1920, and has been prepared to meet the needs of normal schools and colleges which desire to teach the general history of education, but which do not have the time or the inclination to go into the subject in such detail as IS glven in the larger volume above referred to. The general plan of the two books is the same. Like the larger History of Education, the present volume is a history of the practice and progress and organization of educa tion itself, rather than a history of educational theory, and pre sents the history of education as a phase of the history of the rise and development and spread of our Western civilization. As in the larger volume, ' I have 'tried here to present such a picture of the rise, struggle for existence, growth, and recent great expan sion of the idea of the improvability of the race and the elevation and emancipation of the individual through education as would be most illuminating and useful to students of the subject. To this end I have traced the great forward steps in the emancipation of the intellect of man, and the efforts to perpetuate the progress made through the organization of educational institutions to pass on to others what had been attained. Excerpt from Readings in the History of Education: A Collection of Sources and Readings to Illustrate the Development of Educational Practice, Theory, and Organization The Readings which this volume reproduces have been collected, from time to time, by the author in connection with the instruction of university classes in the general history of education, and have been used with students as reading supplemental to a lecture course on the subject. They are now gathered together and organized into the present volume, and made to run parallel with and to supplement the authors textbook on the History of Education, published at this same time. The chapter arrangement of the two books is the same, and the different Readings are referred to by cross-reference (R. 172, etc.) throughout the History volume. At the same time the selections are of such a general nature, have been so organized and arranged, and their importance and significance are so explained in the chapter introductions, that the volume of Readings may be used as a reference volume of sources by instructors using other texts on the history of education. The Readings have been selected and arranged primarily with a view to illustrating the history of educational practice and progress and organization, rather than the history of educational theory, though a number of typical and illustrative selections from the more important writers on educational theory, and particularly modem theory, have been included. They have also been selected with a view to illustrating that aspect of the history of educational progress which conceives of educational development as being a phase of the rise and preservation and spread of our western civilization.
