Since its political independence in 1965, Singapore has achieved rapid economic growth and transformed itself into a major global financial, business and transport/information technology (IT) hub, with GDP per capita ranking among the highest in the world since the beginning of this decade. While the first three decades of Singapore’s rapid economic growth have been based largely on a strategy to attract and leverage global multinational corporations (MNCs) to create increasingly higher value-adding economic activities, the last 25 years have witnessed an increasing shift toward promoting technological innovation and entrepreneurship, and the building of a vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem that supports several major clusters of innovation, including medtech, smart urban mobility/infrastructure and internet/mobile e-commerce. More recently, the city-state has also been seeking to accelerate the commercialization of a wider range of deep technologies from universities and public research labs, including artificial intelligence (AI), advanced materials and fintech.

This book is about innovation ecosystems, Clusters of Innovation (COI) and the Global Networks of Clusters of Innovation (GNCOI) they naturally form. What is innovation and why is it important to us? Innovation is nothing less than the ability for constructive response and adaptation to change. The cause and catalyst for that change is frequently identified as technology and its unceasing pressure to improve on existing solutions and address unmet needs. The last decade has painfully demonstrated that exogenous environmental shocks are also sources of change that call for innovative responses, ranging from the obvious challenges such as global warming and Covid-19 to the more subtle social and political perturbations of our time.

Technology-based startup enterprises are an increasingly important part of the business landscape in Asia and the Pacific. By applying innovative technologies to create new products and services, they can make a significant contribution to economic development while generating social and environmental benefits. However, to survive and then thrive, tech startups require an enabling ecosystem that includes supportive government policy, and adequate access to capital, skilled personnel, and quality digital infrastructure. This report examines Singapore’s vibrant tech startup ecosystem and identifies key lessons that can inform the efforts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to nurture and develop their tech startups. The report focuses on four key sectors: climate change and environment, agriculture, education, and health.

This book explores how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed entrepreneurial business practices and policies. The role of digitalization and de-internationalisation as part of entrepreneurial business thinking is discussed in this book as a way of keeping track with new research avenues. Due to the fundamental way the COVID-19 pandemic shocked and surprised entrepreneurs, it becomes important to develop new business patterns. The discussion in this book centres on the question: how has business practices changed in the post-COVID-19 era and what needs to be learnt? Each chapter in this edited book presents a different way to understand these changes and make sense of alterations in the global business environment, thereby ensuring that business academics, policy makers and practitioners are kept abreast of changes. Whilst there have been books on the COVID-19 pandemic, this book goes a step further by presenting new research into the post-COVID-19 pandemic era that is of a recent nature. This means it is amongst the first edited book to focus on patterns in terms of business marketing and management that have an entrepreneurial nature. This is helpful to gain a better nuanced and detailed understanding about the implications that are ongoing and future orientated arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This book analyzes the components of the startup ecosystem, including the characteristics that can favor or disadvantage the development of new innovative ventures. The author believes it is essential to identify crucial variables of start-up ecosystems that have a context-specific influence on the well-being and development of startups. In this regard, the book analyzes the concept of the start-up ecosystem both from the point of view of scholars and professionals. The author then deals with the diverse approaches to studying startup ecosystems, which have over the years become increasingly complex, and less linear, making systematization indispensable. The author provides therefore a classification with a transversal logic with respect to this diversity of contributions in the literature. The main theoretical contributions to start-up ecosystems are grouped according to the attention they place on three different variables: territorial contexts, resources, and actors. The author also presents qualitative, interview-based, research using narrative analysis mode to understand the three variables. The work provides, on the one hand, the proposal of a framework as a theoretical interpretative model useful both for the description of the fundamental components of the start-up ecosystem, and also useful for giving a boost to future research. On the other hand, the book also presents evidence of a practical nature useful to support and guide the choices of startup founders and of managers of companies and institutions that orbit within start-up ecosystems.

In business, success hinges not only on individual performance but on the vitality of the broader ecosystem in which a company operates. However, crafting a thriving ecosystem alone is not enough to ensure success. Equally vital is the ability to manage relationships within this ecosystem effectively, harnessing its potential to enhance overall performance. Moreover, startups face the daunting challenge of scalability, a pivotal factor in long-term sustainability. Yet, achieving scalability often proves elusive due to complexities in resource management and ecosystem development. Innovation and Resource Management Strategies for Startups Development is a comprehensive solution to the pressing issues of resource management, ecosystem development, and startup scalability. This unique reference book delves deep into these critical aspects, offering a wealth of ideas, case studies, and best practices alongside thorough theoretical analysis. We recognize the undeniable influence of resource management and ecosystems on startup scalability, and our objective is to enhance understanding in this domain. By examining the powerful concepts that have shaped development policy and dissecting the role of resource management and ecosystem development in current discourse, our book provides the necessary insights to identify inefficiencies and facilitate startup scalability. It goes beyond mere theory, fostering collaborative strategies among resources, ecosystems, and startups on a global scale, ultimately contributing to social and economic development.
