Traditionally, children have lived in their parents' homes until they were married and ready to start their own families. Leaving Home before Marriage explores a step that young American adults are increasingly taking--setting up a household alone or with housemates. Frances K. Goldscheider and Calvin Goldscheider analyze this profound change as it figures in the plans of young people and their parents and in the decisions they eventually make about their living arrangements. The Goldscheiders find that gender attitudes, ethnic and religious values, and generational relationships shape the path young people take to residential independence.

In a wide-ranging analysis of the drama of history, the importance of ethnicity, and Jewish identity, these essays explore areas of political and cultural disciplines fused with elegance in the work of the late eminent sociologist Werner J. Cahnman. The prominence of the American and European historians, philosophers, geographers, sociologists, and anthropologists in this volume represents evidence of the wide effect that Cahnman's work had on scholars in a number of fields in academic work. This volume will make timely and rewarding reading for social scientists and historians, especially those concerned with the religious factor. Contributors: Joseph B. Maier, Chaim I. Waxman, Louis Dumont, Karl Bosl, K.M. Bolte, Edmund Leites, Lewis S. Feuer, Lester Singer, Harriet D. Lyons, Andrew P. Lyons, Alvin Boskoff, Nathan Glazer, Irving Louis Horowitz, Herbert A. Strauss, William Spinrad, Calvin Goldscheider, Saul B. Cohen, and Emmanuel Maier.

In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Published in 1997. The aim of this book is to explore urban modelling traditions, identify key limitations and contributions and to develop a more general model within a discrete choice framework. The scope of the effort is on household choices regarding residential location, workplace and housing tenure. It is the first systematic effort to analyze the structure and sequence of the choices made by households regarding residential location and workplace. The implications for urban theory, model development and policy analysis are substantial.

This book and its contributing scientists address core theoretical, conceptual, developmental, identity, and policy issues surrounding the changing ethnic profile of American families. Guided by the increasing number of cross-cultural adoptions, interracial marriages and the resulting multiethnic families and children, social and behavioral scientists provide both scientific documentation and insights about and into these emerging family systems, their dynamics, challenges and interactions with society and in so doing legitimate this line of scientific inquiry. Their work, organized and presented in a coherent form, sets the stage for the advancement of theory, research, public policy and practice in pursuit of understanding and addressing their needs.

Challenging the concept of the 'typical' family, the authors illustrate the diversity of household forms and kinship ties throughout history. They explore the social, political, emotional, and economic functions of the family as well as the importance of gender, class, race, and culture in shaping it. A variety of contemporary families are described, and provocative questions are raised about families of the future.
