Providing unique perspectives drawn from Russian Orthodox sources not easily found in the Western world, this book explores questions regarding the nature of God's existence and the immortality of the human soul. It includes many examples of the awareness of life after death and argues that the expectation of a future life and faith in God form the foundation of a well-ordered life. This insightful look into the Orthodox Christian theology offers hope of something greater than a temporal existence and discusses questions relevant to every human being.

The twenty-fifth mystery in the New York Times–bestselling series “is cause for celebration. . . . Leon brilliantly exposes the corrupt world of Venice” (Bay Area Reporter). At a fundraising dinner for a Venetian charity, a wealthy and aristocratic patroness asks Brunetti if he will investigate the fifteen-year-old attempted drowning of her granddaughter, which left the girl irreparably brain damaged. Brunetti’s not sure what to do, but out of a mixture of curiosity, pity, and a willingness to fulfill the wishes of a guilt-wracked older woman—who happens to be his mother-in-law’s best friend—he agrees. Brunetti soon finds himself unable to let the case rest, if indeed there is a case. Awash in the haunting story of a woman trapped in a damaged perpetual childhood and the rhythms and concerns of contemporary Venetian life, from historical preservation to housing to new waves of African migrants, The Waters of Eternal Youth is another wonderful addition to this series. “Donna Leon’s Venetian mysteries never disappoint . . . A bittersweet story that makes us appreciate Brunetti’s philosophical take on the indignities, insanities, and cruelties of life.” —The New York Times Book Review “A new Brunetti adventure is always worth celebrating. . . . In a marvelous and moving last scene, we glimpse a moment of almost transcendent beauty that makes us realize again how important this series is to our reading lives.” —Booklist (starred review) “Leon’s latest novel marks the 25th anniversary of her wonderfully atmospheric series. . . . A sweet poignancy flows through Leon’s narrative like the faint smell of chrysanthemums bordering the ancient palazzos.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Since the devastating passing of her beloved grandmother, the legendary High Priestess of Magic, Claire Roux-Scott, as well as the death of her estranged mother, several years earlier, Kendra has struggled to make a new life and identity for herself, in her ancestral New Orleans, far away from her childhood home of Oakland, California. For the last two years, Kendra has cultivated her talents as a Magic Woman, searched for inner peace, while healing from the wounds of her past. Yet, when Mother Claire comes to Kendra, with the warning that Kendra’s sister, Shannon, as well as her lifelong friends, Angela Stone and Grace Lu, descendants of powerful Magic Women, known as the Eternal Circle, are in danger, Kendra knows that she must face her fears and return home. “Everything comes full circle…” Back in Oakland, Shannon Scott senses the looming peril as well. She too, has experienced the omens of a rising evil and the escalating fears that the Veil that separates the real world and the world of Darkness is diminishing forever. Shannon has struggled to distance herself from magic and all the trauma that it has caused in her family. She has made diligent efforts to keep her close friends from discovering their magical heritage, with the intentions of keeping them normal and safe. However, with Kendra’s sudden return home, as well as a series of abnormal, horrifying events that transforms the lives of all four women, Shannon and the others must accept that magic, in all its chaos and wonder, is perhaps their only salvation. As family tensions flare, secrets are revealed, and terrors are unfolded, the four women will have to face their own individual demons and embrace their gifts of magic. Soon, they will have to unite, against an ancient Order of Dark Magicians, demonic abominations, and ultimately, a timeless, malevolent, and preternatural force that has awakened and is coming, not just for their magic, but for their souls.

By re-examining Nietzsche's notion of the eternal-feminine and his views on women and feminism, this volume offers new perspectives on some of his key ideas. It brings together a diverse group of scholars to critically engage with Nietzsche's use of late-19th-century gender stereotypes and the ways in which they served his critique of values, including his use of woman as a trope for truth. Among other subjects, the contributors consider the role of psychology in Nietzsche's thought, his concern with style, self-creation, and advocacy of perfectionism, his views on romantic love and marriage, and his aim of revaluing all values to instigate a distant philosophy of the future. They investigate parallels between Nietzsche's thought and Shaktism, his relation to Goethe and Stendahl, and his influence on Beauvoir, Butler, and Dohm. With the inclusion of two seminal essays on Nietzsche and women by Lawrence J. Hatab and Kelly Oliver, the volume also illustrates some of the ways in which scholarship on these subjects has evolved over the last four decades. Providing fresh insights into these inter-related subjects, Nietzsche on Women and the Eternal-Feminine highlights the enduring relevance of his thought and its still-underappreciated potential for re-thinking both the bases for and aims of feminism and other emancipatory movements.
