In The Embodiment of Characters, Jones DeRitter examines the connection between the eighteenth-century London stage and the early English novel. DeRitter begins with the sweeping changes decreed by the Stage Licensing Act of 1737, which closed three of London's five legitimate theaters and dictated that every new play would have to be censored and licensed by the Lord Chamberlain's office. Before 1737, reading plays had been a favorite pastime of literate English men and women, after 1737, many of these readers shifted their attention to novels. After using The Beggars Opera and The London Merchant to trace the different ways that sex and death could be presented in the material world of theatrical performance, DeRitter uses Clarissa and Tom Jones to explain how the debate over the value and consequences of human physicality was transformed by the shift from the London stage to the pages of the realistic novel. A crucial central chapter focuses on the life and autobiographical Narrative of Charlotte Charke—performer, memoirist, and male impersonator—whose struggle to define and defend herself traversed the boundaries between print and performance, between public and private life, and between the human body and the person who inhabited it. The Embodiment of Characters will be of interest to students and scholars of eighteenth-century, gender, and cultural studies, and English literature.

Sexual types on the early modern stage are at once strange and familiar, associated with a range of "unnatural" or "monstrous" sexual and gender practices, yet familiar because readily identifiable as types: recognizable figures of literary imagination and social fantasy. From the many found in early modern culture, Mario DiGangi here focuses on six types that reveal in particularly compelling ways, both individually and collectively, how sexual transgressions were understood to intersect with social, gender, economic, and political transgressions. Building on feminist and queer scholarship, Sexual Types demonstrates how the sodomite, the tribade (a woman-loving woman), the narcissistic courtier, the citizen wife, the bawd, and the court favorite function as sites of ideological contradiction in dramatic texts. On the one hand, these sexual types are vilified and disciplined for violating social and sexual norms; on the other hand, they can take the form of dynamic, resourceful characters who expose the limitations of the categories that attempt to define and contain them. In bringing sexuality and character studies into conjunction with one another, Sexual Types provides illuminating new readings of familiar plays, such as Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Winter's Tale, and of lesser-known plays by Fletcher, Middleton, and Shirley.

Norms of embodied behaviour for males and females, as promoted in mainstream Western public arenas of popular culture and the everyday, continue to work, overtly and covertly, as definitive and restrictive barriers to the realm of possibilities of embodied gender expression and appreciation. They serve to disempower and marginalize those not inclined to embody according to such dichotomous models. This book explores the ramifications of the way our gendered, sexed and culturally constructed bodies are situated toward notions of difference and highlights the need to safeguard the social and emotional well-being of those who do not fit comfortably with dominant norms of masculine/feminine behaviour, as deemed appropriate to biological sex. The book interrogates gender inequitable machinations of education and performance arts disciplines by which educators and arts practitioners train, teach, choreograph, and direct those with whom they work, and theorizes ways of broadening personal and social notions of possible, aesthetic, and acceptable embodiment for all persons, regardless of biological sex or sexual orientation. The author’s own struggles as a performance artist, educator, and person in the everyday, as well as the findings of empirical fieldwork with educators, performance arts practitioners, and high school students, are employed to illustrate and advocate the need for self reflexive scrutiny of existing and hidden inequities regarding the embodiment of gender within one’s own habitual perspectives, taste, and practices.
