Excerpt from The Elson Basic Readers: Primer The second aim in this revision was to incorporate new features demanded by experience and the results of recent experiments in reading. Four such features merit Special emphasis: (a) organization of the material to promote sequential habits of thinking; (b) simplicity in content, sentence structure, and vocabulary to insure rapid progress, confidence, and keen interest; (0) balanced variety to cause a steady growth in diversified reading interests; and (d) a practical method, based on the results of scientific studies, to build an early foundation for the various reading attitudes, habits, and skills that are essential in modern life. An additional distinctive feature of the Primer relates to the extreme care exercised in every stage of its construction. In addition to continuous and painstaking effort by the authors, the materials included were subjected to the constant criticism of experts in primary instruction. Furthermore, studies were continually in progress with respect to various problems which were subject to quantitative determination. These are listed in the manual which accompanies the Primer. 'If Finn Maison shouts jump you jump or you are dead.' Twelve-year-old Willem has two main aims in life: to fly and to make at least two friends of his own age. But all the other boys from the Beckham Estate do is make him jump off things. First his desk - and now the wall. As his toes teeter on the edge, Sasha Bradley gives him a tiny little wink. Might she become his friend? Bullied by Finn and his gang the Beckham Estate Boyz, Willem has no choice but to jump. As he flies through the air he flaps his arms, wishing he could fly and escape into the clouds. Instead he comes crashing down and breaks his ankle. Sasha, angry with herself for not stopping Finn and his Boyz, is determined to put things right. And soon, while the gangs riot on their estate, Willem and Sasha form an unlikely friendship. Because they share a secret. Sasha longs to fly too. And when Magic Man Archie arrives with stories of war-flying spitfires, he will change the lives of the kids on the Beckham Estate for ever. And perhaps find a way for Willem and Sasha to fly ... Touching on themes such as friendship and bullying, this is a charming tale about overcoming obstacles and finding friendship in unlikely places. A heart-warming tale that celebrates neurodiversity and the power of alternative thinking from an author known for her honest, heartfelt and inclusive stories. There's Akin who can't sit still for more than two minutes and is almost always getting into trouble, sports star Ste is recovering from a car accident that left him learning how to walk again and Molly-May's school uniform never fits and is a regular at the local foodbank. But when a mystery horse gallops into their lives one stormy evening, it changes everything. Desperate to keep him safe they form the Secret Horse Society and vow to protect this amazing creature. Inspired by stories of the great racehorse Seabiscuit, they name him Jammie Dodger and find they when they work together, nothing seems impossible. Even the Big Read Off at school. They just need to keep their new horse friend a secret. How hard can it be to hide a horse, anyway?
