A. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDl,2 This report reviews and interprets research on the nature and magnitude of the effects of those factors which influence how well knowledge and skills (K&S) are retained over relatively long periods of nonuse. Our interest lies in the kinds of knowledge domains and skills that military personnel must master to function effectively on their jobs. The practical concern impelling this study is that K&S degradation or loss (which we will refer to as "decay") can and does occur, often and severely enough, to jeopardize military preparedness. There are occasions in all the military services when personnel who have just completed their training do not receive an opportunity to practice or use their new capabilities for weeks or months. In the case of reservists who may be called back to active duty, the period of nonuse of relevant military job skills may be counted in terms of years. B. OBJECTIVES The overall objective is to critically analyze the relevant scientific literature which relates the processes involved in learning to those of memory, taking into account the characteristics of the learner and the learning tasks. More specifically, we have focused on the following sub-objectives: 1. Identify, describe and rank the influence and the interactions of the important major variables that affect long-term retention (LTR); 1 I am indebted to Dr. Jesse Orlansky, Institute for Defense Analyses, for his encouragement and guidance through all phases of this report.

The Late Eight, Third Edition provides clinical resources to help clinicians, students, and academics evaluate and treat late-acquired sounds. The text is an ideal resource for anyone working with individuals whose speech contains errors affecting [θ], [ð], [s], [z], [l], [r], [ʃ], or [tʃ]. Additionally, vocalic [r] is included because it often serves as a step to reaching consonantal [r]. The third edition keeps (and slightly modifies) the clinical resources while expanding the toolkit to include new essential clinical concepts, including evidence-based practice, Spanish-influenced English, the curriculum, and a new treatment model. New to the third edition: 4 new chapters: Chapter 1: A Late 8 Update, Chapter 2: Using Evidence to Guide Clinical Practice, Chapter 3: The Late 8 en español, Chapter 4: Speech Sound Disorders, Literacy, and CurriculumContributing authors provide their expertise As in previous editions, resources for each late-acquired sound include: technical and nontechnical definitions;age of acquisition;common errors;key phonetic environments;useful metaphors;touch cues;initial screening tests;stimulability tests;demonstrations of place, manner, and voicing;phonetic placement and shaping techniques;speech exercises: language awareness and speech activities;lists of words divided by phonetic and word environments; andminimal pairs.*Disclaimer: Please note that ancillary content (such as documents, audio, and video, etc.) may not be included as published in the original print version of this book.

Principles of Training provides insight into the different variables presented by training tasks. It presents a wide sample of experimental data to reveal to the intending practitioner of training—whether in industry, in sport, in the defense services or other fields—that awareness of experimental findings must be paralleled by competence in analyzing tasks in order to determine how and where any particular principles may reasonably be applied. The book begins with an introductory chapter on the evaluation of training, experiments on training, limitations of training, and training problems. This is followed by separate chapters that discuss how trainers can influence the course of learning by manipulating knowledge of results; methods for minimizing errors in early learning; visual training methods; the use of words and actions in training; and the importance of practice in learning. Subsequent chapters cover the transfer of training; automatic teaching, or ""programmed instruction""; and recommendations for trainers.
