Alonzo Typer lived an exotic life as researcher of the occult, his studies taking him to many interesting places around the world including India, Nepal, Tibet, Indochina and Easter Island. His final adventure to a dilapidated manor house once owned by suspected witches, however, seemed on the surface much less exciting. Yet it was on this seemingly innocuous trip in 1908 that Alonzo disappeared, leaving only his diary as evidence of the terrible secrets that lay within the cursed house. Originally published in the “Weird Tales” in 1938, "The Diary of Alonzo Typer" is a classic example of horror fiction written by H. P. Lovecraft. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American writer of supernatural horror fiction. Though his works remained largely unknown and did not furnish him with a decent living, Lovecraft is today considered to be among the most significant writers of supernatural horror fiction of the twentieth century. Read & Co. is publishing this classic short story now as part of our “Fantasy and Horror Classics” imprint in a new edition with a dedication by George Henry Weiss.

This horror story has a man unable to distinguish between what is real and not real in a museum and finding out in a very horrific way. Stephen King said "H. P. Lovecraft has yet to be surpassed as the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale."

The story is written in first person. It depicts the main character going outside Hampden and finding a special tree. The tree makes him day dream about a big temple in a land with three suns. The temple was half-violet, half-blue. Some shadows attracted him into the inside. He thought he saw three flaming eyes watching him and he shouted twice and the vision was gone.Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He is notable for blending elements of science fiction and horror; and for popularizing "cosmic horror": the notion that some concepts, entities or experiences are barely comprehensible to human minds, and those who delve into such risk their sanity. Lovecraft has become a cult figure in the horror genre and is noted as creator of the "Cthulhu Mythos," a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a "pantheon" of nonhuman creatures, as well as the famed Necronomicon, a grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works typically had a tone of "cosmic pessimism," regarding mankind as insignificant and powerless in the universe.Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, and his works, particularly early in his career, have been criticized as occasionally ponderous, and for their uneven quality. Nevertheless, Lovecraft's reputation has grown tremendously over the decades, and he is now commonly regarded as one of the most important horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting an influence that is widespread, though often indirect.

The patient suffers a series of violent, trance-like episodes during which he recounts an epic battle against a mysterious, otherworldly entity. Are the fits merely the byproduct of a mental illness -- or is something much stranger going on?
