David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English writer and poet. His collected works represent, among other things, an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. Some of the issues Lawrence explores are sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity, and instinct. Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage". At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his considerable talents. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." The philosopher Bertrand Russell characterised Lawrence as a proto-German Fascist. Later, the literary critic F. R. Leavis championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness. This volume collects 13 classic short stories: A MODERN LOVER HER TURN LOVE AMONG THE HAYSTACKS MOTHER AND DAUGHTER NEW EVE AND OLD ADAM RAWDON'S ROOF STRIKE-PAY THE BLUE MOCCASINS THE MORTAL COIL THE OLD ADAM THE OVERTONE THE PRINCESS THE WITCH A LA MODE THINGS If you enjoy this ebook, don't forget to search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press Megapack" to see more of the 300+ volumes in this series, covering adventure, historical fiction, mysteries, westerns, ghost stories, science fiction -- and much, much more!

James Wood has selected fourteen of D. H. Lawrence's stories that demonstrate clearly the breadth of Lawrence's achievement in the shorter form. The stories are "Strike-Pay," "Love Among the Haystacks," "The Prussian Officer," "The Thorn in the Flesh," "A Fragment of Stained Glass," "Odour of Chrysanthemums," "England, My England," "The Blind Man," "The Fox," "St. Mawr," "The Woman Who Rode Away," "The Border Line," "The Man Who Loved Islands," and "The Man Who Died." In a long introductory essay, "The Success of Failure: D. H. Lawrence's Short Stories," written especially for this Modern Library edition, Wood discusses Lawrence's supremacy as a religious novelist who is also a modern writer with profound Romantic tendencies.
