In seventeen slices of life that defy the expected and launch us into the absurd, T.C. Boyle offers his unique view of the world. A primate-center researcher becomes romantically involved with a chimp; a Norse poet overcomes bard-block; collectors compete to snare the ancient Aztec beer can, Quetzacoatl Lite; and Lassie abandons Timmy for a randy coyote. Dark humor, delirious fantasy, and surreal satire come together in this collection that brilliantly expresses just what the "evolution" of mankind has wrought.

What does it mean to be male in the 21st Century? Award-winning artist Grayson Perry explores what masculinity is: from sex to power, from fashion to career prospects, and what it could become—with illustrations throughout. In this witty and necessary new book, artist Grayson Perry trains his keen eye on the world of men to ask, what sort of man would make the world a better place? What would happen if we rethought the macho, outdated version of manhood, and embraced a different ideal? In the current atmosphere of bullying, intolerance and misogyny, demonstrated in the recent Trump versus Clinton presidential campaign, The Descent of Man is a timely and essential addition to current conversations around gender. Apart from gaining vast new wardrobe options, the real benefit might be that a newly fitted masculinity will allow men to have better relationships—and that’s happiness, right? Grayson Perry admits he’s not immune from the stereotypes himself—yet his thoughts on everything from power to physical appearance, from emotions to a brand new Manifesto for Men, are shot through with honesty, tenderness, and the belief that, for everyone to benefit, updating masculinity has to be something men decide to do themselves. They have nothing to lose but their hang-ups.

When Professor Linyard came back from his holiday in the Maine woods the air of rejuvenation he brought with him was due less to the influences of the climate than to the companionship he had enjoyed on his travels. To Mrs. Linyard's observant eye he had appeared to set out alone; but an invisible traveller had in fact accompanied him, and if his heart beat high it was simply at the pitch of his adventure: for the Professor had eloped with an idea.

Born into the "hoi polloi" of New York society in 1862, Edith Wharton married in 1885, and that marriage was a disappointment -- she may well have been born and bred to be a society wife, but she was a woman with "talent," and it was a talent that would not leave her in peace. She published her first story in 1889, and numerous books in the years that followed. Among those books were "The Touchstone" (1900), "Crucial Instances" (1901), "The Valley of Decision" (1902), "Sanctuary" (1903), "The House of Mirth" (1905), "The Fruit of the Tree" (1907), "Madame de Treymes" (1907), "Ethan Frome" (1911), "The Reef" (1912), "The Custom of the Country" (1913), "Summer" (1917), "The Marne" (1918), "The Age of Innocence" (1920), "The Glimpses of The Moon" (1922), "A Son At The Front" (1923), "False Dawn" (1924), "New Year's Day" (1924), "The Old Maid" (1924) (with Zoe Akins), "The Spark" (1924), "The Mother's Recompense" (1925), "Twilight Sleep" (1927), "The Children" (1928) aka "The Marriage Playground," "Hudson River Bracketed" (1929), "Certain People" (1930), "The Gods Arrive" (1932), and "Human Nature" (1933). In 1913 the Whartons divorced, and Edith took up permanent residence in France. She lived there until she passed, in 1937.
