Excerpt from The Dedication of Goodnow Memorial Building and Bagg Hall: Princeton Massachusetts, September 6th, 1887 In the year 1884, Edward A. Goodnow by a deed of gift transferred to the Town of Princeton the Memorial Library Building which he had erected in the Centre. At a later date he gave to the Town for the site of a town hall a suitable lot of land adjoining the site of the Memorial Building together with such a sum of money as insured the construction of the building in its present style and completeness. These enterprises made it desirable that the Congregational church, standing directly in front, should be removed in order to give the new buildings their full effect. The proprietors of the church happily concurred in this view and the edifice was removed and the land which it had occupied was made a public possession. When these things had been accomplished, the Town at its annual meeting in March 1887 made provision for the dedication of the new buildings; and all things being in readiness the Dedication took place on the sixth day of September in the same year. The principal addresses and speeches on the occasion here follow, while an account of the proceedings, preliminary and concurrent, will be found with other matters in the Appendix. In 1632, after climbing up the face of a boulder near present-day Waltham and facing west toward Neipnett, Gov. John Winthrop sighted Wachusett Mountain rising against the setting sun. However, the idea of a town did not take hold until 1742, when the first settler, Joshua Wilder, arrived from Lancaster and established a tavern. By the mid-1800s, magnificent hotels and guesthouses dotted Princeton's landscape. Princeton and Wachusett Mountain shows the early days of tourism when visitors from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia rode stagecoaches to relax in the shade, play croquet on the common, and breathe country air. The village of East Princeton, meanwhile, flourished differently-chair factories used a fast-moving stream to run machines, and farmers worked the fields. Village life was simple and focused on family and the earth.
