William Johnson was one of the central figures in the war between the French Canadians and the British (1756 1761) for the possession of Canada. He was an Irishman of tremendous tenacity and charm, who managed to galvanize the native American Indians into a powerful fighting force, aligning them with the British, and finally defeating the French Canadians in the battle on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec. Although Johnson is a powerful political figure and wealthy landowner (he offers a five pound bounty for any French scalp the Iroquois turn in), he has some serious character flaws, one of which is a nagging doubt about his sexual prowess. In order to compensate for this neurotic trait, he attempts to seduce every female in sight, regardless of age or ethnic origin, and eventually contacts syphilis. One female he fails to seduce, however, is a young French Canadian redheaded girl named Angelique Vitry, who reminds him of Kathleen, the red-haired Irish lass he left behind in County Cork, Ireland. Angelique is only eleven years old, but she looks sixteen. She was an orphan whose mother died on a boat bringing Irish immigrants to Canada. Raised by nuns in a Catholic orphanage in Montreal, shes a repressed youngster, totally ignorant of sex. When she is befriended by Johnson, she becomes obsessed with him, and develops a hysterical pregnancy. Johnson is torn between fatherly devotion to the youngster and an attraction that is deeply rooted in the girls close resemblance to Kathleen. Johnsons housekeeper, Mary, whose father is Chief Hendricks of the Iroquois tribe, has lived with him for many years and given him a son called Light As A Feather. She is jealous of Angelique, and convinces her father that the girl is possessed, and must be destroyed before she spreads a pestilence on all the Iroquois Nation. This puts Johnson in a dilemma: if he clings to Angelique, he risks losing the support of the Iroquois in a decisive upcoming battle with the French; if he lets her go, he wins their support. He lets her gobut the Iroquois fail to keep their end of the bargain, and decide to burn Angelique at stake, convinced that shes a witch. Johnson saves Angeliques life by having one of his soldiers escort her back to her home in Quebec, knowing full well that by so doing he will have to fight the French on his own. Later, Johnson is wounded in battle. During a retreat, he takes shelter in a cabin that his soldiers have found in the woods. Ironically, it turns out to be the home of Angeliques stepfather and stepmother, who have now betrothed her to a French Sergeant she hates. While Johnson is recuperating from his battle wounds, with Angelique nursing him, he discovers a gold cross in Angeliques possession; the same one that he had given to Kathleen, back in Ireland. Johnson is devastated by the realization that he was sexually attracted to his own daughter, and steals away from her once he is well enough to travel. An amnesty in the war is declared and a celebration takes place on the grounds of Johnsons estate. He has now become deathly ill with the venereal disease. While he is giving a speech before his troops, Light As A Feather delivers the scalp of his daughter Angelique to him, claiming the reward of five pounds. Johnson angrily draws his sword, and is about to slay his son when he is distracted by a vision he has of Kathleen approaching him through the woods. Light As A Feather sees his chance and drives a knife into his fathers back. Eric Till will direct this film, and Kevin Spacey has been submitted the script for consideration. Agent: BK Nelson, Inc. An epic adventure based on the extraordinary historical story of Sir William Johnson and the author's dreams of a Mohawk "woman of power" who lived three centuries ago. An epic adventure based on the extraordinary historical story of Sir William Johnson and the author's dreams of a Mohawk "woman of power" who lived three centuries ago. “Robert Moss is a writer of considerable skill. In The Firekeeper, he shows a talent for accurate historical detail and an ability to recreate the past, both as it was and as it might have been. To read The Firekeeper is to be transported to another time and place, and leave it measurably enlightened.” — James A. Michener “The Firekeeper depicts with accurate and exciting detail the time of the French and Indian Wars. Through the fictionalized lives of historical individuals, Sir William Johnson and Catherine Weissenberg, and memorable, almost mythical characters such as the Iroquois shaman, Island Woman, and Ade, a former slave, the narrative springs to life. The characters, even the minor ones, are clearly-drawn in this fast-paced tale, and the pages keep turning as we learn about the lives of the original inhabitants of this land, and of the early European settlers. This fascinating historical novel offers just the right mix: an involving story which imparts a deeper undersanding.” — Jean M. Auel, author of The Clan of the Cave Bear “Some rare novels defy labels. The Firekeeper is such a book. An intricately detailed historical novel....a mystical journey, a breathtaking adventure tale, and a passionate exploration of the human heart. This is a book to savor when you truly want to lose yourself in another world.” —Morgan Llywelyn, author of Lion of Ireland “In Moss’s vibrant docu-novel, the American colonial frontier is aflame during the 1700s as imperial rivalry pits colonists against British and French armies and their Indian allies. ... Moss backs his vigorous adventure story with detailed research, summarized in extensive source notes.” — Publishers Weekly “I admire Robert Moss’s skill in weaving an elaborate web around his larger-than-life characters. In The Firekeeper, readers are swept back into the eighteenth century to the veritable fusion of our country’s diversity. An epic adventure of William Johnson and the Mohawks. I found the story so good it was hard to do much until I had read all of it.” — Anna Lee Waldo, author of Sacajawea Robert Moss is a novelist, journalist, historian, and lifelong dream explorer. His fascination with the dreamworlds springs from his early childhood in Australia, where he survived a series of near-death experiences and first encountered the ways of a Dreaming people through his friendship with Aborigines. For many years he has taught and practiced Active Dreaming, an original synthesis of dreamwork and shamanic techniques. His many books include Conscious Dreaming, Dreamgates, Dreamways of the Iroquois, and The Secret History of Dreaming. His novels include the three-volume cycle of the Iroquois, The Firekeeper, The Interpreter, and Fire Along the Sky.

THE LITERARY WORKS OF JOVANKA BACH Produced and directed by John Stark (ph.818 222 6031) I was rummaging through my dear deceased wife Jovanka Bachs belongings, when I uncovered a hidden treasure a never before seen copy of a play entitled Night song For The Boatman, which she had written over twenty years ago, and filed away without telling me about it. And when I read it I was utterly amazed. I immediately went into production with the piece, which I found as fascinating as the best works of Albee, Beckett and Ionesco. It deals with a character she called, Harry Appleman, an aging, alcoholic, washed-up poet, plays dice with fate, and loses. He is called upon to make a mysterious boat trip, by voices from the wilderness, but through various cunning contrivances he tries to avoid his mortality. Then he discovers his humanity when he learns he cant sacrifice his daughter Jessie, for the boat trip, but a tricky graduate student, Gordon Levy will do instead. The Lets Talk Off-Broadway reviewer Yvonne Korshak praised the production I staged at Barrow Group Theatre, calling it a skillfully crafted play, beautifully acted and designed, a totally enjoyable and rewarding evening of theatre.
