This open access book represents one of the key milestones of PoliVisu, an H2020 research and innovation project funded by the European Commission under the call “Policy-development in the age of big data: data-driven policy-making, policy-modelling and policy-implementation”. It investigates the operative and organizational implications related to the use of the growing amount of available data on policy making processes, highlighting the experimental dimension of policy making that, thanks to data, proves to be more and more exploitable towards more effective and sustainable decisions. The first section of the book introduces the key questions highlighted by the PoliVisu project, which still represent operational and strategic challenges in the exploitation of data potentials in urban policy making. The second section explores how data and data visualisations can assume different roles in the different stages of a policy cycle and profoundly transform policy making.

Original, amusing, and brilliantly documented, Shake is a heartwarming collection of sixty-one beguiling dogs caught in the most candid of moments: mid-shake. This glorious, graphic volume will stop you dead in your tracks as you are presented with images of man's best friend caught in contortion: hair wild, eyes darting, ears and jowls flopping every which way. With Shake, photographer Carli Davidson proves how eager and elated we are to see our pets in new ways. The result is a one-of-a-kind book: a colorful assemblage of photographs that are simultaneously startling and endearing, consistently hard to look away from, and revealing.

The papers comprising Vol. I and Vol. II were prepared for and presented at the International Conference on Information Networking 2002 (ICOIN 2002), which was held from January 30 to February 1, 2002 at Cheju Island, Korea. It was organized by the KISS (Korean Information Science Society) SIGIN in Korea, IPSJ SIG DPE (Distributed Processing Systems) in Japan, the ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), and National Taiwan University in Taiwan. The papers were selected through two steps, refereeing and presentation review. We selected for the theme of the conference the motto “One World of Information Networking”. We did this because we believe that networking will transform the world into one zone, in spite of different ages, countries and societies. Networking is in the main stream of everyday life and affects directly millions of people around the world. We are in an era of tremendous excitement for professionals working in many aspects of the converging networking, information retailing, entertainment, and publishing companies. Ubiquitous communication and computing technologies are changing the world. Online communities, e commerce, e service, and distance learning are a few of the consequences of these technologies, and advanced networking will develop new applications and technologies with global impact. The goal is the creation of a world wide distributed computing system that connects people and appliances through wireless and high bandwidth wired channels with a backbone of computers that serve as databases and object servers. Thus, Vol.

“Bruce Schneier’s amazing book is the best overview of privacy and security ever written.”—Clay Shirky Your cell phone provider tracks your location and knows who’s with you. Your online and in-store purchasing patterns are recorded, and reveal if you're unemployed, sick, or pregnant. Your e-mails and texts expose your intimate and casual friends. Google knows what you’re thinking because it saves your private searches. Facebook can determine your sexual orientation without you ever mentioning it. The powers that surveil us do more than simply store this information. Corporations use surveillance to manipulate not only the news articles and advertisements we each see, but also the prices we’re offered. Governments use surveillance to discriminate, censor, chill free speech, and put people in danger worldwide. And both sides share this information with each other or, even worse, lose it to cybercriminals in huge data breaches. Much of this is voluntary: we cooperate with corporate surveillance because it promises us convenience, and we submit to government surveillance because it promises us protection. The result is a mass surveillance society of our own making. But have we given up more than we’ve gained? In Data and Goliath, security expert Bruce Schneier offers another path, one that values both security and privacy. He brings his bestseller up-to-date with a new preface covering the latest developments, and then shows us exactly what we can do to reform government surveillance programs, shake up surveillance-based business models, and protect our individual privacy. You'll never look at your phone, your computer, your credit cards, or even your car in the same way again.

Meet the A300 and A350--the two newest cameras in Sony’s beginner-friendly "A” series. They’re alike except for sensor resolution (the 350 has the highest available in any consumer model), and are perfect for anyone ready to move up from point-and-shoot cameras. That’s because they actually allow photographers to view the scene in front of them on the LCD monitor prior to shooting. Owners will look to this guide to find out how to use the Live Preview with AF and exposure control; adjustable variable angle LCD monitor that flips out and twists; and Super SteadyShot(R) image stabilization that vastly reduces blur.
