Industrial foundations are foundations that own companies. Typically, they combine charitable and business goals. Some global companies such as IKEA, Robert Bosch or the Tata Group are foundation-owned, but nowhere are they as numerous as in Denmark. Three of the four largest Danish companies - the pharma company Novo Nordisk, the shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk, and the Carlsberg brewery - are all foundation-owned. Surprisingly, very little has been written about what industrial foundations are, and how they operate. The Danish Industrial Foundations provides a comprehensive overview. The book covers aspects such as theory, law, taxation, economic importance, company performance, governance and philanthropy. The book is the result of a large collaborative research project, led by the author, on industrial foundations. [Subject: Business, Economics, Industrial Foundations]

With detailed case examples, the book provides generalized solutions for SMEs to answer the question of how to make succession and innovation simultaneously successful. The authors discuss the potential solutions to solve the challenges of SMEs on succession and innovation by considering the utilization of the capital market, the electronic commerce strategy, the international strategy, and angel investment to pursue portfolio entrepreneurship, and compare these Asia solutions to the experiences from Europe. The book is recommended for family business and SME owners, professionals serving these firms, and the consulting firms that work on continuity issues of SMEs in Asia.

Corporate governance is a complex idea that is often inappropriately simplified as a cookbook of recommended measures to improve financial performance. Meta studies of published research show that the supposed benign effects of these measures - independent directors or highly incentivised executives - are at best context-specific. There is thus a challenge to explain the meaning, purpose, and importance of corporate governance. This volume addresses these issues. The issues discussed centre on relationships within the firm e.g. between labour, managers, and investors, and relationships outside the firm that affect consumers or the environment. The essays in this collection are the considered selection by the editors and the contributors themselves of what are seen as some of the most weighty and urgent issues that connect the corporation and society at large in developed economies with established property rights. The essays are to be read in dialogue with each other, giving a richer understanding than could be obtained by shepherding all contributions into a single mould. Nevertheless taken together they demonstrate a shared sense of deep concern that the corporate governance agenda has been and still is on the wrong track. The contributors, individually and collectively, identify in this compendium both a research programme and a platform for change.

ISBN: 3030526704

This book offers a comprehensive business history of one of the largest global brewing companies. By combining industrial history with insights from corporate management and strategy, it reveals the success story of a family-owned company that has achieved a market-leading position worldwide. The author provides deep insights into the founding of the modern Danish brewery by J.C. Jacobsen Carlsberg in 1847, the company’s subsequent rapid success, the relationship between brewing and science, and the importance of the Danish scientist H.C. Ørsted in establishing this relationship. Readers will also learn about the founder’s son, Carl Jacobsen, and the tensions between him and his father; the establishment of the Carlsberg Foundation in 1876; and the transfer of J.C. Jacobsen’s breweries to the foundation in 1888, which makes it likely the oldest managing foundation in Europe. Further chapters cover business agreements concerning the Danish beer market in the 20th century, the relations with Tuborg Ltd., the period of occupation in 1940-45, and how Carlsberg finally merged with - but in reality took over -Tuborg in 1970 and missed out on international business opportunities in the 1980s and 1990s. It also examines why Carlsberg has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy since 2000, e.g. by taking over its competitor Scottish and Newcastle together with Heineken in 2008, and has now become the third largest brewery in the world. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of brewing and the success factors of one of the leading global breweries.
