The University of Pennsylvania owns the largest collection of Minoan artifacts outside of Europe. The objects were acquired legally from the nation of Crete after it became independent from the Ottoman Empire and before its request was accepted to become a part of Greece, whose laws forbade such gifts to institutions that had sponsored archaeological expeditions. This third volume about the Cretan Collection in the Penn Museum presents the Minoan metal artifacts. They provide primary evidence for the early history of metallurgy in southeastern Europe during the second millennium B.C. This is a rich and varied assemblage of objects, with a large number of different classes. It is especially rich in items from the preliminary stages of metalwork (including oxhide ingot fragments, cut preliminary strips, and small cast strips used as early stages in the manufacture of artifacts). The study using modern techniques of examination-including scientific analyses-both documents the museum's holdings and provides new information on Minoan metalworking. Two important metallurgical techniques are documented: eutectic bonding of silver-capped rivets on daggers and "casting on" repairs to an existing object, which has not been noted previously in Minoan metalwork. The assemblage is remarkable for the light its objects shed on the history of technology.

The Minoan town at Gournia flourished from the Early Bronze Age until its destruction at the end of the Late Minoan IB period. It was later resettled before being abandoned again in LM IIIB. The town was substantial, with houses arranged in irregular blocks. This book presents the pottery found during Gournia's excavation in 1901, 1903 and 1904. This collection, now in The University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, is the largest and most important group of Minoan objects from a single site outside of Europe.

The pithos is one of the most distinctive utilitarian forms of the Cretan Bronze Age ceramic repertoire. Because of its use as a storage container, a pithos is the foremost parameter for the evaluation of the economic organization of palatial and domestic sectors of Cretan Bronze Age society. The pithoi as pottery and their significance for the understanding of the Cretan Bronze Age economy has been the focus of a research project carried out from 1989 to 1999. This book is not a pithos handbook in the narrow sense, although the study offers a typological division of the data with comments on chronology and spatial distribution. It integrates stylistic considerations with broad fabric and technological observations in order to understand the production and consumption of pithoi.

Vrokastro remains one of the few Early Iron Age settlements excavated in Crete, and it is key to understanding the nature and history of regional settlement during this period. Volume I of the Vrokrastro survey presents the first catalogue of the pottery excavated from the settlement and cemeteries by Edith Hall in 1910 and 1912, along with a brief analysis of metal objects from the town and its cemeteries and new profile drawings and photographs. This site is important for its size, long settlement history that includes both the Bronze and Early Iron Age, and its artifacts, which reveal a local pottery tradition and contacts with other areas of Crete and the Aegean. In addition, Vrokastro is the only completely excavated site within the survey boundaries, and is thus the type-site for the new systematic survey recently undertaken in this area. During the pioneering years of archaeological exploration in Crete, between 1900 and 1904, the American archaeologist Harriet Ann Boyd excavated a number of sites on the Isthmus of Ierapetra. The results of these excavations and particularly that of the Bronze Age site at Gournia, were published by Boyd in a series of preliminary reports and in a final publication. But the basic source of information for any comprehensive reconsideration of archaeological material -the excavation records- was largely lacking. In 1990 an important part of the lost original archive, consisting of excavation notebooks, miscellaneous notes and drafts of reports, letters and financial records, came to light. This monograph gives a synopsis of the documents; it focuses on the archaeological information, which mainly concerns Gournia. Descriptive data, sketches and line plans of the settlement buildings and the tombs (some completely unpublished) and information on their contents which emerge from the Archive are quite detailed, shedding new light on our knowledge of Gournia. The author assesses this information, comparing it with the published accounts and with the remains still visible on the site. She also points out the importance of the new information for further studies.
