Excerpt from The Court of a Saint Long the road which borders the meadows between Paris and Montl'hery there was, on a spring morning of the year 1227, an air of great bustle and commotion. From the gates of the city Since daybreak bands of men had been marching out till the road was an avenue, not of the straight poplars of the Seine country, but of armed men. Stout burghers in imposing if unaccustomed armour lined the way, followed by men with maces and cross-bows. Among them moved not a few knights with shining helmets and shields, and squires in charge of those heavy masses of tapestry beneath which lurked the horses of the Middle Ages. Here and there were glimpses of the ragged smocks and bright pitchforks of peasants from the fields, the gay head-dresses of women, the white and black cowls of passing monks. In the foreground of these moving figures may be pictured the prancing dogs and dignified flowers of a Botticelli or Filippo Lippi, in the background, the white towers and the white walls of Paris. In that eager crowd every face was turned towards the far-away turrets of Montl'hery. Above all the noise and gossip rose one persistent rumour, of how the lord King and his mother were returning to Paris, of how the lords of Champagne and Boulogne, of Dreux and Brittany. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Excerpt from The Court of Louis XV If you want romance, said M. Guizot one day, why not turn to history? The great author was right. The historical novel is out of fashion at present. People are tired of seeing celebrated people misrepresented, and they agree with Boileau that "Nothing is so beautiful as the true, the true alone is lovely." Are there, in fact, any inventions more striking than reality? Can any novelist, however ingenious, find more varied combinations or more interesting scenes than the dramas of history? Could the most fertile mind imagine any types so curious as, for example, the women of the court of Louis XV.? The eternal womanly, as Goethe said, is all there with its vices and virtues, its pettiness and its grandeur, its weakness and its strength, its egotism and its devotion. What an instructive gallery! What diverse figures, from such a saint as Madame Louise of France, the Carmelite, to Madame Dubarry, the courtesan! Excerpt from The Diary of a Saint January 1. How beautiful the world is! I might go on to say, and how commonplace this seems writ ten down in a diary but it is the thing I have been thinking. I have been standing ever so long at the window, and now that the curtains are shut I can see everything still. The moon is shining over the wide White sheets of snow, and the low meadows look far off and enchanted. The outline of the hills is clear against the sky, and the cedars on the lawn are almost green against the whiteness of the ground and the deep, blue-black sky. It is all so lovely that it some how makes one feel happy and humble both at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
