Grayson County is famous in southwestern Virginia as the cradle of the New River settlements--perhaps the first settlements beyond the Alleghanies. The Nuckolls book is equally famous for its genealogies of the pioneer settlers of the county, which, typically, provide the names of the progenitors of the Grayson County line and their dates and places of migration and settlement, and then, in fluid progression, the names of all offspring in the direct and sometimes collateral lines of descent. William Kellie (b. ca. 1700) was born in Galloway. He married Margaret Kilpatrick and they were the parents of seven children. One of his children was Robert Kellie/Kelly (1734-1808) who was born in Kirkmardrine, Scotland and married Mary Gibson. They were the parents of four children. He and his family immigrated to America before 1774 and settled in New York where he served in the American Revolution. Their numerous descendants live throughout the United States.
