Excerpt from The Continuation School in the United States The term continuation school, while commonly used in England for some time, has not been generally employed in this country and may need some further explanation. As used in this bulletin, it refers to any type of school which offers to people while they are at work opportunity for further education and training. It thus pre supposes educational training of some kind, and continues but does not necessarily repeat the work of the regular school. It is supple mentary to the work of the regular school in the sense that it is 1 additional to it, and is supplementary to the training which the indi vidual is receiving in his occupation, in the sense that it aims to give him that which he can not receive in his daily work. The term supplementary school is, however, used in such a vague way at present that the term continuation school seems preferable. Excerpt from Report on Continuation SchoolsThe Continuation School to be really effective must deal with large numbers. It is not made an integral part of the State system simply that the few with ambition to excel in their calling or with a desire for self-improvement may have the opportunity to gratify their wishes. The reason is a much wider and deeper one. The Continuation School arises rather out of the utter inadequacy of any education which terminates at 14 years of age to fit the youth of the country either for the demands that are now made upon them under the existing arrangement of industry, or for the social and civic demands that are made upon them as members of a democratic State. It is felt that the State cannot afford to leave a large percentage of its population with no more instruction and training and preparation for the responsibilities of life than is got in the Primary School, with the addition only of the unorganised and haphazard training that is picked up in the ordinary avenues of industry and business. The State cannot afford merely to cater for the few whose commercial or trade ambitions lead them to self improvement, while the many receive nothing more than the foundation laid in the elementary school. Commercial considerations demand more than this. Industrial conditions demand more. Above all, the need for an intelligent citizenship demands more.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Boston Continuation School: Circular of Information and Courses of Study Continuation schools are the direct outcome of modern industrial development, the subdivision of labor, the introduction of machinery, the growth of large plants where the individual is lost, the passing of apprenticeship, and the growing conviction that the state must provide educational Opportunity to meet the needs of all its children. The task of the Continuation School therefore becomes plain. The gap between the idealistic school life and the practical life of employment must be bridged. The means of intellectual and educational advancement which were lost with the passing of the apprenticeship system must be replaced. Society must be protected by reducing the ranks of the unfortunate and the ignorant. Further train ing in the fundamentals of education must be given but it must be Offered in such form as the young worker will accept. The deadening influence of automatic work must be offset and a more perfect, democracy must be established by affording each young worker his opportunity to make the most of himself. The young employee must be trained for useful, satisfying work as a reaction against the' influ ences which tend toward parasitic existence; he must learn to occupy his time with wholesome self-improving activities; he must be helped in making his educational experience count; he must be aided in determining his most promis ing aptitudes; he must be assisted in forming habits of economy and thrift; he must be guided to make the best and the most of himself and of life. In some instances it may seem desirable to have more than six weeks short course, but for a beginning a maximum of six weeks is advised. The numbers given for each topic within the week, represent roughly the subject - matter for each day of the week. The regular teachers of the school, together with such local help as the leaders in the community can give, may carry on the short course without seriously Interfering with the work of the regular school courses.
