This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ...and fraternally yours, Order Of Railway Conductors. C. E. Whitney, A. B. Garretson, Grand Secy-Treas. President. Note.--The Order donated the use of a large room, heated, for ten months, on the first floor of its office building in Cedar Rapids, and the local Chapter of the American Red Cross is fully appreciative, as will be seen in the above correspondence.--Ed. Individual S It is noticed that there is a tendency of organized bodies of individuals to appropriate money from their treasuries to purchase War Savings Stamps. There have been numerous instances in which such bodies have purchased $1,000 worth of War Stamps, and such instances have been given wide publicity as indicating the popularity of the War Saving idea as well as showing proof of the probable success of the War Savings plan. It is commendable and praiseworthy that associations of men and women should be patriotic enough to vote such sums from their treasuries for the purchase of War Savings Stamps, and it is to be hoped that the practice will be continued. But the War Savings campaign will not be a success unless it is adopted and practiced by individuals. ving Needed It is individual saving, individual thrift, and individual patriotsm that our country needs at the present time. Association treasuries or union treasuries are small in proportion to numerical strength. Suppose a union with a thousand members votes to invest a thousand dollars from its treasury in War Savings Stamps; then suppose the members of that union assume that they have done their duty to the War Savings campaign. What have they in reality done? They have simply invested one dollar apiece in the war, and this indirectly. They have not in reality become War Savers at all. The War Savings campaign is...

By 1933, the Pennsylvania Railroad had been in existence for nearly ninety years. During this time, it had grown from a small line, struggling to build west from the state capital in Harrisburg, to the dominant transportation company in the United States. In Volume 2 of The Pennsylvania Railroad, Albert J. Churella continues his history of this giant of American transportation. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Pennsylvania Railroad was the world's largest business corporation and the nation's most important railroad. By 1917, the Pennsylvania Railroad, like the nation itself, was confronting a very different world. The war that had consumed Europe since 1914 was about to engulf the United States. Amid unprecedented demand for transportation, the federal government undertook the management of the railroads, while new labor policies and new regulatory initiatives, coupled with a postwar recession, would challenge the company like never before. Only time would tell whether the years that followed would signal a new beginning for the Pennsylvania Railroad or the beginning of the end. The Pennsylvania Railroad: The Age of Limits, 1917–1933,represents an unparalleled look at the history, the personalities, and the technologies of this iconic American company in a period that marked the shift from building an empire to exploring the limits of their power.

In The Twenty-Ninth Poem: Vol. 2, author Daddy Dave dedicates a variety of poems, stories, and observations to his daughter in honor of her twenty-ninth birthday. As with his first volume, which was dedicated to his son, this collection offers additional unique observations about life. Written in free-verse, non-rhyming style, many of the entries reflect the mystic union between father and daughter: and then a moment later I blew a little harder and a little harder until finally I exhaled through my nose hard enough onto that little finger of yours that I made a slight honking sound, and you giggled. That was the seed of the magic, and within seconds the concept clicked with you, and you ran down the hallway showing off your newly acquired talent to your mother. ?from ?How to Blow Your Nose? No two children are exactly alike, and so this second volume differs from the first in that it includes some short stories, many written by the author's daughter when she was in the fourth grade and included here with minor modifications. Children and families are precious, and Daddy Dave encourages every parent to write down their own versions of unique stories so that they can be remembered, considered, and passed down to future generations.
