Excerpt from The Colonel and the Quaker Memory quickly accused me, in the presence of this 11beloved lady, of not having paid closer attention when she related many pleasing anecdotes and reminiscences; a longing came upon me that in some way these old stories and gossips might be vouchsafed me. As if in answer to this wish, the tall, old eight-day clock appeared to tick louder, and to be imbued with life. The Revolutionary sword hanging above the commission of a soldier ancestor, seemed to be stirred upon its hang ings, although no breeze played about the room. While watching this strange phenomenon the severely straight lines of the old family timepiece gave place to curved ones; the rigid plumes upon its top assumed the shape of a broad-brimmed beaver hat, with the brim turned up; while beneath, the gold face of the clock with its silver figures faded away. As it grew dimmer, a round, ruddy human face took its place, while the silver rim became snow white hair surrounding the head. Having been so absorbed in watching the metamorphosis of the face of the old heirloom I had not noticed that its case had changed into the very well-rounded figure of a Quaker gentleman in the dress worn by Friends (quakers) about the year 1750. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Hugh Wynne Free Quaker, Vol. 1: Sometime Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel on the Staff of His Excellency General Washington As these pages will show, I have found it agree able, and at times useful, to try to understand, as far as in me lay, not only the men who were my cap tains or mates in war or in peace, but also myself. I have often been puzzled by that well-worn phrase as to the wisdom of knowing thyself, for with what manner of knowledge you know yourself is a grave question, and it is sometimes more valuable to know what is truly thought of you by your nearest friends than to be forever teasing yourself to determine whether what you have done in the course of your life was just what it should have been. Excerpt from The Handsome Quaker, and Other Stories They were supping at Joshua. Fayle's, behind shuttered windows, although without a green and gold summer twilight yet lingered. Perhaps it behoved the Quakers to be chary of displaying wealth and importance, as it did their wealthy Roman Catholic neighbours, who led their lives of luxury and refinement behind blank walls that said nothing to the world. Perhaps there were other reasons for shutting out the daylight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Hugh Wynne: Free Quaker Sometime Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel on the Staff of His Excellency General Washington It is now many years since I began these memoirs. I wrote fully a third of them, and then put them aside, having found increasing difficulties as I went on with my task. These arose out of the constant need to use the first person in a narrative of adventure and incidents which chiefly concern the writer, even though it involve also the fortunes of many in all ranks of life. Having no gift in the way of composition, I knew not how to supply or set forth what was outside of my own knowledge, nor how to pretend to that marvellous insight, as to motives and thoughts, which they affect who write books of fiction. Excerpt from Hugh Wynne Free Quaker, Vol. 2: Sometime Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel on the Staff of Excellency General Washington The ascent from the city is gradual. At Mount Airy it is more abrupt, and yet more steep at Chest nut Hill, where my aunt's house, on the right, looks down on broken forests, through which the centre marched by the Perkiomen road. The fight on our right wing I knew nothing of for many a day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
