Lister was a student at Glasgow, Edinburgh and then a Professor of Surgery at King's College, London. He is the founder of the antiseptic principle and this work had a profound effect unpon modern surgery and obstetrics. Lister did not write any books so his Collected papers is his lasting monument.

This is volume two of a two volume set. The two volumes contain all the papers and addresses which Joseph Lister himself considered to possess permanent interest and importance. The papers have been classified under four general heads, according as they deal with Physiology, Pathology and Bacteriology, the Antiseptic System, or General Surgery, while various general addresses and lectures are gathered together in a fifth part. In arranging the several papers in each Part chronological order has generally been followed.
