Excerpt from The Clinical Pathology of the Blood The following translation was authorised by Professor v. Limbeck shortly before his premature death, and represents the latest German edition save for the fact that Dr. Freund's chapter, which deals chiefly with the physio logical aspects of blood 'coagulation, and certain other passages have been considerably condensed. Professor V. Limbeck had a world-wide reputation as an authority upon all points connected with the physiology, pathology, and chemistry of the blood, and his early death was a heavy blow to every one interested in these subjects. He was a man of singularly engaging nature and of enormous capacity for work, and notwithstanding the many calls upon his time, was ever ready to help any who, like ourselves, had the inestimable' privilege of working with him. In addition to this Professor v. Limbeck combined many qualities which are not always associated with great learning. He was generously appreciative of the work done by others whilst on those rare occasions on which he was shown to be at fault, he was the first to admit his error. A touch of quiet humour and gentle satire also character ised him, as may be seen in the few but telling words with which he dismisses the plausible theory of Bunge, and the preposterous one of Neusser. Excerpt from The Clinical Pathology of the Blood of Domesticated Animals That the examination of the blood has not been more generally used by veterinarians is partly due to the lack of accessible data concerning the blood of animals. There is a real need of a text book that will place this material within the reach of practitioners and students. It is true that but few data have been collected concerning the blood of animals compared with the amount known regarding the blood of man. Some work has, however, been done and the results obtained are of more value than their mere amount would indicate, because from the studies made of the condition of the blood in diseased animals we have learned that similar pathological processes produce, in general, changes in the blood similar to those produced by such processes in man. So the rich results obtained in human practice are made available to the veterinary practitioner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Clinical Pathology of the Blood: A Treatise on the General Principles and Special Applications of Hematology Much of the theoretical discussion in the volume, abstracts of Special articles, and reports Of cases, have been set in fine print, so as not to encumber the main text, which has been constructed for the student and general reader. The wants Of the laboratory worker and Special student of hematology have been partly considered in the chapter on Technics and Chemistry, and in the limited references to pathological anatomy. Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from Histology of the Blood: Normal and Pathological In no department of Pathology has advance been so fitful and interrupted as in that dealing with blood changes in various forms of disease, though none now offers a field that promises such an abundant return for an equal expenditure of time and labour. Observations of great importance were early made by Wharton Jones, Waller, and Hughes Bennett in this country, and by Virchow and Max Schultze in Germany. Not, however, until the decade ending in 1890 was it realised what a large amount of new work on the corpuscular elements of the blood had been done by Hayem, and by Ehrlich and his pupils. As successive papers were published, especially from German laboratories, it became evident that the systematic study of the blood by various new methods was resulting in the acquisition of a large number of facts bearing on the pathology of the blood; though it was still difficult to localise many of the normal haematogenetic processes. Excerpt from The Principles of Clinical Pathology: A d104-Book for Students and Physicians The numerous American studies referred to in the text and footnotes contain, as a rule, comprehensive bibliographies. Professor Krehl's appended note on the cardiac arrhythmias (referred to in his Preface) has been incorporated into the main body of the text. The translation though not a literal one, does not depart in any essential way from the original text, and embodies, it is hoped, the spirit of the latter. I have allowed myself the privilege of certain condensations and slight rearrangements - all with the view of rendering the material more serviceable to the readers for whom it is intended. Editorial notes - several of which are taken from the earlier American editions - are included in parentheses. It is with keen pleasure, finally, that I acknowledge my debt to Dr. R. G. Hoskins, Professor of Physiology in the North-western University Medical School, for his constant stimulus and many suggestions; and to Messrs. J. B. Lippincott Co. for their cooperation throughout the preparation of the volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
