And amidst what do the Christians of our day live? Are they not surrounded by a world that is ceasing to be Christian; that does not wish to return to Christianity, that does not wish others to belong to it, that persecutes in every possible way those who persist in doing so? Excerpt from Christianity in the Nineteenth Century From God; the other is at once formal and material, pro A csode from man, and is of the earth. What is achieved through the Spirit may be done by one church, but is the common possession and glory of all the Churches what is performed in the weakness and imperfection of the human conditions is, and remains, the church's own, evidence of the incomplete subordination of the society on earth to the Lord in heaven. The extraordinary thing is, not that the Churches have so often fatally erred and disastrously failed in duty, but that they have been able, in spite of their errors and failures, so far to obey the Christ, and to render so much service to man. Excerpt from Jesus in the Nineteenth Century and After At a later date I hope to give a systematic statement and defence of certain principles of the philosophy of religion, that are only suggested in occasional sentences in the present volume. I am greatly indebted to my father, Mr. J. T. Widgery, for reading through the whole in manuscript and making many valuable criticisms, and to a much respected friend who read the proofs and suggested a large number of improvements. Excerpt from Testimony of Nineteen Centuries to Jesus of Nazareth: An Unrivalled and Unique Collection of Rare and Remarkable Tributes From Many Countries and Centuries Never before has there been among all classes of people such an interest in the life, character, words, and influence of Jesus Christ, as now. Men everywhere are coming more and more to recognize the important fact, that christ is Christianity, and that his character is its central evidence. To emphasize and illustrate these great cardinal truths, and to meet and increase the public interest in them, to the end that the Master and his religion, as he taught it to men, may be more loved, honored, and revered, have been the objects aimed at in the preparation of this volume. In the prosecution of this aim, I have endeavored to include as little extraneous and irrelevant matter as pos sible, and to avoid, as far as was practicable, the discussion of controverted questions in theology. I begin, as I thought it most suitable to do, with some of the more remarkable passages from the Gospels, in which Jesus bears witness to himself and to the character and object of his mission. These testimonies of Jesus form an essential part of the Gospel record, and give us, in the light of his perfect self-consciousness, the most authoritative statements con cerning himself and his religion that we possess. Taken with their contexts, they form the basis of all Christian literature, and are incomparably the most precious words ever spoken to men.
