Chloe Stevens Sevigny (/?klo?.i? ?s?v?ni/; born November 18, 1974) is an American film actress, fashion designer and former model, born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Sevigny gained reputation for her eclectic fashion sense and developed a broad career in the fashion industry in the mid-1990s, both for modeling and for her intern work at New York's Sassy Magazine, which labeled her the new "It Girl" at the time, garnering her attention within New York's fashion scene. Sevigny made her film debut with a leading role in the controversial film Kids (1995), written by Harmony Korine, which led to an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance. A long line of roles in generally well received independent and often avant-garde films throughout the decade established Sevigny's reputation as an indie film queen. In 1999, Sevigny won eight acting awards and gained serious critical and commercial recognition for her first mainstream role in the critically lauded Boys Don't Cry, for which she also received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Sevigny continued acting in mostly independent art house films, such as American Psycho (2000), Party Monster (2003), The Brown Bunny (2003) and Dogville (2003). In 2006, Sevigny gained a leading role in the HBO television series Big Love, for which she received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2010. Additionally, Sevigny has two Off-Broadway theatre credits, and has starred in several music videos. She has also designed several wardrobe collections, most recently with Manhattan's Opening Ceremony boutique. This book is your ultimate resource for Chloe Sevigny. Now anybody can raid Chloë Sevigny's wardrobe! Re-inventing the looks of 1989 for 2008, Sevigny has designed her first collection for the discerning New York/Los Angeles boutique Opening Ceremony. It's a concise and carefully assembled collection, comprised of 40 pieces, and this volume presents each of them as photographed by Mark Borthwick, who first shot Sevigny for Purple magazine 10 years ago. The collection was inspired by the teen fashions of the late 80s and early 90s in Connecticut and New York, where Sevigny grew up, and further inflected by the looks of "women who are outrageous yet effortless--Liz Goldwyn, Cecilia Dean, Angelica Houston, Marlene Dietrich, Debbie Harry, Poison Ivy, Slim Keith, Patti Smith." In Sevigny's vision, calico and Liberty prints might be matched with gingham check trousers--each piece evokes a look but can be combined to many ends. In this mix-and-match volume, in which each page is split into two separately flippable sections, Sevigny models each ensemble with a minimum of fuss, allowing the clothes to speak for themselves. Borthwick's ethereal photographs are complemented with drawings by Marika Thunder, Rita Ackerman, Lizzie Bougatsos, Benjamin Cho, Dan Colen, Matt Damhave, Amy Gartrel, Lily Ludlow and Spencer Sweeney.

Fiction. Women's Studies. YOU COULD STOP IT HERE is about girls who are trapped. From the suburbs of Austin to the sublets of New York City, they are searching for an escape from destructive relationships, parents caught up in second romances and Bunko, and the embarrassments of adolescence. Their beliefs that bravery is transformative lead them to make risky decisions that promise shaky rewards: the attentions of an older lover, an idolized sister's approval, or the preservation of a forbidden relationship. This is a collection about accepting the wrong invitations, the rush to be unburdened by innocence, and the desires, both juvenile and inevitable, that fuel irreparable mistakes. It is about the desperation and longing inherent in the struggle to become whole, and the realization that adulthood won't protect us from hurt.

Actress-designer Chloë Sevigny marks the debut of her new line of unisex menswear with this limited-edition hardcover volume. First called on to model her collection of tweedy wools, Fair Isle knits, and animal print jacquard sweaters, Chloë's redheads became muses for a project focusing on the curious place of red hair in our culture. Curated by Sevigny, Reds features contributions from Slater Bradley, Peter Coffin, Matt Damhave, Brian DeGraw, Joe DeNardo, Brendan Fowler, Jess Holzworth, Matt Keegan, Karen Kilimnik, Nate Lowman, Marlene McCarty, Jack Pierson, Rob Pruitt, Aurel Schmidt and Kon Trubkovich. Original works by these artists accompany images by David Armstrong, shot on location at the photographer's townhouse in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. In addition, redhead lore from Lily Ludlow explores centuries of redhead mythology, which variously described the fair-skinned, freckled breed as temperamental, magical, unlucky, jolly, beautiful and deviant.

A dazzling debut collection of raw and explosive poems about growing up in a sexist, sensationalized world, from a thrilling new feminist voice. i’m a good girl, bad girl, dream girl, sad girl girl next door sunbathing in the driveway i wanna be them all at once, i wanna be all the girls I’ve ever loved —from “Girl” Lauded for the power of her writing and having attracted an online fan base of millions for her extraordinary spoken-word performances, Olivia Gatwood now weaves together her own coming-of-age with an investigation into our culture’s romanticization of violence against women. At times blistering and riotous, at times soulful and exuberant, Life of the Party explores the boundary between what is real and what is imagined in a life saturated with fear. Gatwood asks, How does a girl grow into a woman in a world racked by violence? Where is the line between perpetrator and victim? In precise, searing language, she illustrates how what happens to our bodies can make us who we are. Praise for Life of the Party “Delicately devastating, this book will make us all ‘feel less alone in the dark.’ ”—Miel Bredouw, writer and comedian, Punch Up the Jam “Gatwood writes about the women who were forgotten and the men who got off too easy with an effortlessness and empathy and anger that yanked every emotion on the spectrum out of me. Imagine, we get to live in the age of Olivia Gatwood. Goddamn.”—Jamie Loftus, writer and comedian, Boss Whom Is Girl and The Bechdel Cast “I’ve read every poem in Life of the Party. I’ve read each of them more than once. In some parts of the book the spine is already breaking because I’ve spent so much time poring over it and losing hours in this world Olivia Gatwood has partly created, but partly just invited the reader to enter on their own, caution signs be damned. This book is enlightening, inspiring, igniting, and f***ing scary. I loved every word on every page with a ferocity that frightened me.”—Madeline Brewer, actress, The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black, and Cam

This “extraordinary” novel of one man’s border crossing reveals “a human history of sorrow and suffering, all of it beginning with the thirst to be free” (NPR). Héctor is trapped. The water truck, sealed to hide its human cargo, has broken down. The coyotes have taken all the passengers’ money for a mechanic and have not returned. Héctor finds a name in his friend César’s phone: AnniMac. A name with an American number. He must reach her, both for rescue and to pass along the message César has come so far to deliver. But are his messages going through? Over four days, as water and food run low, Héctor tells how he came to this desperate place. His story takes us from Oaxaca—its rich culture, its rapid change—to the dangers of the border, exposing the tangled ties between Mexico and El Norte. And it reminds us of the power of storytelling and the power of hope, as Héctor fights to ensure his message makes it out of the truck and into the world. Both an outstanding suspense novel and an arresting window into the relationship between two great cultures, The Jaguar’s Children shows how deeply interconnected all of us are. “This is what novels can do—illuminate shadowed lives, enable us to contemplate our own depths of kindness, challenge our beliefs about fate. Vaillant’s use of fact to inspire fiction brings to mind a long list of powerful novels from the past decade or so: What is the What by Dave Eggers; The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif; The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult.” —Amanda Eyre Ward, The New York Times Book Review “[A] heartbreaker . . . Wrenching . . . with a voice fresh and plangent enough to disarm resistance.” —The Boston Globe “Fearless.” —The Globe and Mail

From the acclaimed filmmaker, artist, and bestselling author of No One Belongs Here More Than You, a spectacular debut novel that is so heartbreaking, so dirty, so tender, so funny--so Miranda July--that readers will be blown away. Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense nonprofit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one. When Cheryl's bosses ask if their twenty-one-year-old daughter, Clee, can move into her house for a little while, Cheryl's eccentrically ordered world explodes. And yet it is Clee--the selfish, cruel blond bombshell--who bullies Cheryl into reality and, unexpectedly, provides her the love of a lifetime. Tender, gripping, slyly hilarious, infused with raging sexual obsession and fierce maternal love, Miranda July's first novel confirms her as a spectacularly original, iconic, and important voice today, and a writer for all time. The First Bad Man is dazzling, disorienting, and unforgettable.
