The Apostle Paul compares his having to withstand his enemies at Ephesus, (acts to a combat of this nature. (1 Cor. Xv. In many passages wicked men are spoken of as wild beasts. It was the day before Christ, mas. The children, that morn ing, had been aroused an hour earlier than usual. Little Emily had been the first one out of bed. Wrapping a shawl about her, she took a big bell, and rang it, so that all the sleepers could hear. That's right, Emily! Cried John, the eldest brother. Ring away, and rouse all the folks. We want breakfast early, so that we can go to the woods and return, before the snow begins to melt. Edward, the next brother, jumped up, and began sing ing, Christmas comes but once a year! Excerpt from The American Penny Magazine, and Family Newspaper, 1846, Vol. 2: With Numerous Illustrative and Ornamental Wood Engravings, for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and Moral and Religious Principles The Areoi Society was a strange and detestable association, formed on the most immoral principles, and for the perpetration of the greatest crimes. It had existed from time immemorial, embraced a large portion of the people, and exerted a most baneful influence. It seems indeed wonderful that any remains of decency could have sub sisted in a nation where so degrading and subversive an institution had a footing. In some of its principal features the Areoi may be compared with customs known among many of the tribes of Western Africa, and in some other parts of the world, as well as with the Bacchanals of the R0 mans. Strange as it may seem, however, even that rofl' ate institution soon began to saccum beore the influence of the Gospel, and was finally annihilated. The following is a description of one of the numerous and interesting scenes which occurred during the early days of Christi. Suity in the Islands. Excerpt from The Children's Hour: A Magazine for the Little Ones, May, 1874 N o wonder Rosy looked 'at the empty cup with tears in her eyes, for coffee, was something she didn't have every day, i and her mother had sweetened this so nicely, and put such nice yellow cream in it, and there wasn't any more, she was' sure; and, oh dear! She couldn't help sob bing outright, thinking what a treat she'd missed. Mrs. Ray pitied Jber distress, though of course it was a trial to have her tablecloth stained, and she would have felt like scolding if it hadn't been an accident. The last drop had been drained out of the coffee-pot, or she would have given her little girl another cup. All she could do was to promise Rosy one the' next morning, and like a wise, thoughtful mother try and divert her. 5 For Mrs. Ray knew these little griefs are as keenly felt by children as graver enes by their elders. 'do you know* where coffee comes from, Rosy dear? Said she, softly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
