Excerpt from The Century and the School, and Other Educational Essays The essays brought together in this volume were selected, by a group of his intimate asso ciates, from the manuscripts of Superintend ent F. Louis Soldan, after his death. They felt that the spirit which had exerted so strong an in uence upon public education might be kept alive in the minds and hearts of teachers through its expression in the literary appeals it had made while in the full force of its activity. Excerpt from Essays on Education and Kindred Subjects The profession of teaching has long been characterised by certain habitual convictions, which Spencer undertook to shake rudely, and even to deride. The first of these con victions is that all education, physical, intellectual, and moral, must be authoritative, and need take no account of the natural wishes, tendencies, and motives of the ignorant and undeveloped child. The second dominating conviction is that to teach means to tell, or show, children what they ought to see, believe, and utter. Expositions by the teacher and books are therefore the true means of education. The third and supreme conviction is that the method of educa tion which produced the teacher himself and the contem petary or earlier scholars authors, and publicists, must be the righteous and sufficient method. Its fruits demon strate its soundness, and make it sacred. Herbert Spencer, in the essays included in the present volume, assaulted all three of these firm convictions. Accordingly, the ideas on education which he put forth more than fifty years ago have penetrated educational practice very slowly particularly in England; but they are now coming to prevail in most civilised countries, and they will prevail more and more. Through him, the thoughts on education of Comenius, Montaigne, Locke, Milton, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, and other noted writers on this neglected subject are'at last winning their way into practice, with the modi fications or adaptations which the immense gains of the human race in knowledge and power since the nineteenth century Opened have shown to be wise. Excerpt from Bill's School and Mine: A Collection of Essays on Education The greater part of the essay, Bill's School and Mine, was written in 1903, but the title and some of the material were borrowed from my friend and college mate William Allen White in 1912, when the essay was printed in the South Bethlehem Globe to stimulate interest in a local Playground Movement. The second essay, The Study of Science, is taken from Franklin and MacNutt's Elements of Mechanics, The Macmillan Company, New York, 1908. I have no illusions concerning the mathematical sciences, for it is to such that the essay chiefly relates. Unquestionably the most important function of education is to develop personality and character; but science is impersonal, and an essay which attempts to set forth the meaning of science study must make an unusual demand upon the reader. Some things in this world are to be understood by sympathy, and some things are to be understood by serious and painful effort. Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation Mr. Best to apply the principles here outlined to English conditions, the wide circulation it certainly deserves. But it is not the mere honour of recognition which constitutes the chief ground of my pleasure. I have grown too old in the struggle for educational ideals to let such personal satisfaction turn my head. Much more important for me is the thought that in so far as other great nations occupy themselves with the spiritual and intellectual elevation of their people, Germany too will reap the benefit of their efforts. The rivalry of two countries in the matter of education is far more welcome, far more profitable, and far more glorious than any competition in armaments. When two neighbours are each truly educated both may dare to live in peace and to devote all their strength to the improvement of their own homes and their own families. The more progress a nation makes internally, the more peaceably will i settle all external differences; and a man' can do bisli country no greater service than by exerting his powers to help other nations in their struggle for moral and intellectual progress, that they may not only uphold the cause of liberty, but may be themselves animated by a spirit of justice and goodwill. Excerpt from The School and Other Educators Finally, every one has at some period or other been a child, a scholar, a subject of education, every son and daughter of the nation has been educated more Or less he has certain associations attached to the term education, and probably views re garding its suitability and its success in his o'wn case. Time would fail to enumerate all the agents, agencies, and interests involved in education - state, church, press, the professions in all their branches, parents, citizens, of all ranks and grades. It is in evitable, that to such a multiplicity of observers education should present different sides, and prob able, that to few if any will its full compass reveal itself.
