"Quem, whom; fugis, are you avoiding; ab demens, you silly ass; habitarunt di quoque, gods too have lived in; silvas, the woods.' Go ahead!"I always brighten the classics—it is part of my system—and therefore I translated demens by "silly ass." But Miss Beaumont need not have made a note of the translation, and Ford, who knows better, need not have echoed after me. "Whom are you avoiding, you silly ass, gods too have lived in the woods.""Ye—es," I replied, with scholarly hesitation. "Ye—es. Silvas—woods, wooded spaces, the country generally. Yes. Demens, of course, is de—mens. 'Ah, witless fellow! Gods, I say, even gods have dwelt in the woods ere now.'"

"It is too late!" said Emok."Hang in there, old friend!" Lunok cried."Pointless!" said the entity that had assimilated Emok's essence. Its voice was deep and infused with energy so dark it made Lunok and the other four Shemsus stagger backwards."Who are you?!" Lunok demanded."Soon, you will know, creature," replied the entity.Lunok raged and thrust his fist towards the sky. A bolt of energy surged from the sky, struck the containment chamber of the entity and started sinking it deeper into the ground."I swear by what I am and the essence I have taken over," the entity promised said via telepathy. "I will be free and then, I will annihilate you all!"The Dimension of Asah contains the Realm of Atlantia, home of creatures called the Shemsus. The essence of Emok, a prominent Shemsu, has become tainted by an entity only known as 'the darkness'. During their latest assignment, Emok passed his tainted essence unto two of their new creations: Michael and Luciel. Featuring fourteen short stories, most previously unpublished, The Life to Come spans six decades of E.M. Forsters writing, from approximately 1903 to 1958, and shows Forster at every phase of his writing career. Forster, feeling his career would suffer, never sought publication for most of the stories, hiding these away along with Maurice, his novel of homosexual love. With stories that are lively and amusing (What Does It Matter; The Obelisk), as well as more somber and deft portrayals of love, truth, and society (Dr Woolacott; Arthur Snatchfold), The Life to Come sheds a light on Forsters powerful but suppressed explorations beyond the strictures of conventional society.
