Why does hockey have so many rules? Do we still need to have penalty boxes? Can't we get rid of off side? And why is practice so important? What's the big deal with the Commissioner? And coaches? And referees? Why can't they just let us play? Anyone involved in hockey--players, parents, fans--would never take any of these questions seriously. Without the rules, there would be no hockey. And without the drills there would be no thrills. And yet Catholics ask similar questions about the Church all the time. Why does the Church have so many rules? Why do we have to go to confession? Why do we need priests? And what's the big deal with the Pope? Why does the faith have to be so difficult? Can't we just play? If you have ever needed help explaining the faith to your children, your friends and family, or even your foes, this is your new playbook. The Catechism of Hockeyis one of the most unlikely, but effective Catholic resources for the New Evangelization.

HOCKEY-From the Buddhist concept meaning Key to Happiness and Chilly Serenity during Bloody Brawls and Melees. How Hockey Saved the World is the greatest, if only, hockey protest book ever written. It is the often true story of how a middle-aged, overweight American got off the couch long enough to lose weight and learn to play hockey in order to find a magic puck that would end the NHL lockout, unseat President George W. Bush and end the Iraq War. A handbook on how to survive without professional sports while becoming a better parent, achieving world peace and playing hockey, however poorly. "A tongue-in-cheek view of politics and sports, delivering humor and laughs that recall the work of Mark Twain, Joseph Heller and Ambrose Bierce. -Cliff Bellamy, Durham Herald-Sun "[T]he author's subversive wit and genuine belief in the game's magic are oddly persuasive. An amiable meditation to warm even the iciest hearts." - Kirkus Discoveries After reading How Hockey Saved the World, and seeing the error of my ways, I will resign the Office of the Presidency effective January 15, 2009. -President George W. Bush

Building on Michael Pennock’s longtime bestseller This Is Our Faith: A Catholic Catechism for Adults, this companion to the Catechism of the Catholic Church retains the favorite question-and-answer format combined with Fr. Daniel J. Mahan’s pastoral and open-minded approach. Fr. Mahan, director of the USCCB’s new Institute on the Catechism, provides concrete answers to questions about God, faith, and the Catholic Church that many people wonder about. He does not shy away from the more challenging questions; when an answer seems difficult, he offers practical advice with compassion and encouragement. Organized around the four pillars of the Catechism—creed, sacraments, Christian life, and prayer—A Journey through the Catechism uses personal reflections, sound reasoning, and practical examples in a question-and-answer format to teach how Catholics: profess their faith worship live their lives in society pray “You were born for much more than you can imagine. You are meant for God. You are meant to live with God and enjoy great happiness,” says Fr. Mahan. “By picking up this book, you have taken the first step to discover or deepen your connection to God and to delve more deeply into the great mystery of your relationship with Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Mahan as well as captivating pull-out features including maps, photo essays, and graphic organizers, this book offers an immersive learning experience. Furthermore, a free, online comprehensive guide to the Lectionary connects questions from the book to themes in the Sunday readings for all three cycles and holy days, making it a perfect resource for homilists. Also included in the Lectionary guide are discussion questions that connect the themes of the Sunday readings to topics in the book, making them ideal for discussion at both Sunday dismissal sessions and further catechetical sessions during the week. Whether you’re a new convert, returning to the faith, or a seasoned Catholic, A Journey through the Catechism will lead you to discover the truth, beauty, and goodness that lie at the heart of Catholicism.

What if you had walked beside the Virgin Mary from the Annunciation to the point at which she and Joseph found Jesus in the temple? How might seeing Christ as a child impact you and your faith? WINE: Women In the New Evangelization offers its second, six-week scripture study, this time following the infancy and early years of Christ as seen through the eyes of Mary and other familiar and imagined women in the gospels. Founder Kelly Wahlquist and ten other members of WINE uniquely blend scripture reflections, imaginative encounters, and visio divina “sacred seeing” with practical spirituality and discussion questions that will help you take a prayerful and creative journey through Advent and the Christmas season. Not much is known about the childhood of Jesus, but the Gospels highlight six key moments in his early life: the angel Gabriel proclaiming Jesus’ birth to Mary at the Annunciation a pregnant Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem the presentation of Jesus in the temple the flight of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to Egypt discovering the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple Week by week, you will dig deep into each of the scriptural vignettes of Jesus’ early life and grow in your faith as you learn about virtues such as humility, patience, charity, reverence, prudence, and courage. Each chapter uses an image that allows you to practice visio divina, the ancient practice of praying with sacred art. The images are included in an eight-page, full-color insert. Gaze Upon Jesus will appeal to women who want to deepen their relationship with Jesus during Advent. Contributors to this inspiring scripture study include: Alyssa Bormes, Sarah Christmyer, Mary Healy, Maria Morera Johnson, Stephanie Landsem, Elizabeth Lev, Joan Lewis, Deborah Savage, Kelly Wahlquist, Katie Warner, and Carol Younger. Popular Catholic media personality Teresa Tomeo, also a member of WINE, wrote the foreword for the book. As an individual or group study, Gaze Upon Jesus is a memorable way to encounter the God who sent his Son to show us his loving Father’s heart.

We all long to know the will of God in our lives, to obtain answers to our prayers, and to receive tangible evidence of the personal care of our heavenly Father. We deeply desire to hear His voice. And here's the good news: God is not silent. He is constantly reaching out to each of us. Often His voice is quiet and can be heard only in prayer. He frequently breaks into our lives with timely remedies, miraculous encounters, and surprising circumstances that can be explained only by the reality of a loving and caring God. Popular Catholic author and radio host Teresa Tomeo has gathered an inspiring collection of such “Godcidences” from her life, as well as personal stories from a variety of Catholics—including broadcasters Joan Lewis, Al Kresta, Steve Ray, and authors Greg and Julie Alexander—of the unmistakable ways God has spoken to them.

At the age of twenty-five, Benjamin James Brenkert--a young man from Long Island, a social work student, and an internet vocation to the priesthood--entered one of the historically boldest, influential, apostolic religious orders of the Roman Catholic Church. Aged thirty-four, and a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in good standing, Brenkert was missioned to the laity by his last religious superior. Brenkert could not come out publicly as a gay Jesuit and support his LGBTQ peers who were being fired from various church employment and volunteer activities because of whom they loved. Brenkert had never concealed his sexuality from his religious superiors, he knew all too well what was written in the Church's Catechism about homosexuals. Still, he felt uniquely called to respond to God's invitation to serve him in total love as a priest, something confirmed in him in prayer during his thirty-day silent retreat and affirmed to him by his religious superiors and peers throughout his life in the Jesuits. In his Open Letter to Pope Francis in 2014 Brenkert wrote, "Pope Francis . . . I ask you to instruct the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to tell Catholic institutions not to fire any more LGBTQ Catholics. I ask you to speak out against laws that criminalize and oppress LGBTQ people around the globe. These actions would bring true life to your statement, 'Who am I to judge?'" In 2015, the United States Supreme Court struck down bans on same-sex marriage in Obergell v. Hodges and in 2020, the United States Supreme Court expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite these landmark achievements in the public sector, LGBTQ Catholics still cannot receive communion and must always seek reconciliation. Their flourishing as part of their religious community is always frustrated. Brenkert's account of his life before, in, and after the Jesuits is interwoven with trials and tribulations, but remains always full of hope, written candidly and with bracing honesty. Brenkert offers readers the opportunity to join him on a theological and spiritual pilgrimage, one that ends with readers making a discernment. The world today is full of distraction, misinformation, and timidity, Brenkert's pilgrimage is full of conviction, heartful, written with an eagerness to help people of faith and no faith at all find their true selves, all for the greater glory of God.
