On the occasion of the celebration of Ramon Muntaner’s Year in 2015, the Biblioteca de Catalunya and the Ministry of Culture of the Catalan Government have published Les cròniques catalanes. Through the voices of the researchers Josep Maria Solé Sabaté, José Enrique Ruiz-Domènec, Raül Sanchis Francés and Núria Silleras Fernández, who tell us about the four great chronicles from a current point of view, the reader is introduced to the medieval world, the arts, the festivals and the role of women. The work gives an account of the most relevant facts found in the chronicles and provides a selection of the most significant manuscripts kept at the Biblioteca de Catalunya, a preservation carried out by historian Almudena Blasco. In addition, the book contains a selection of thirty-nine passages from the various chronicles, accompanied by images of the original documents and their transcriptions. Finally, the book includes a bibliographic work that collects the codices and printed documents that transmit these chronicles, a task curated by Tània Alaix, librarian at the Biblioteca de Catalunya. All content and materials are now gathered in this open access e-book in a new and innovative format, published under a Creative Commons license.

The late Byzantine period was a time characterized by both civil strife and foreign invasion, framed by two cataclysmic events: the fall of Constantinople to the western Europeans in 1204 and again to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Mark C. Bartusis here opens an extraordinary window on the Byzantine Empire during its last centuries by providing the first comprehensive treatment of the dying empire's military. Although the Byzantine army was highly visible, it was increasingly ineffective in preventing the incursion of western European crusaders into the Aegean, the advance of the Ottoman Turks into Europe, and the slow decline and eventual fall of the thousand-year Byzantine Empire. Using all the available Greek, western European, Slavic, and Turkish sources, Bartusis describes the evolution of the army both as an institution and as an instrument of imperial policy. He considers the army's size, organization, administration, and the varieties of soldiers, and he examines Byzantine feudalism and the army's impact on society and the economy. In its extensive use of soldier companies composed of foreign mercenaries, the Byzantine army had many parallels with those of western Europe; in the final analysis, Bartusis contends, the death of Byzantium was attributable more to a shrinking fiscal base than to any lack of creative military thinking on the part of its leaders.

Numerous Byzantine and Western sources describing the events of the Fourth Crusade have now been translated into English. However, the same is not true for material on Frankish Greece, despite this region’s importance to late medieval crusading. The Chronicle of Morea is the key source for the history of the Frankish states established in Greece after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204 and their relations with the reviving Byzantine Empire during the 13th century. It is also an important source for the growth of the Venetian maritime empire. Most of the action centers on the Peloponnesus, then called Achaia or Morea, where crusaders William of Champlitte and Geoffrey of Villehardouin (nephew of the famous chronicler) established a principality and the Villehardouins a dynasty. Preserved in a unique fourteenth-century manuscript, the Old French version of the Chronicle of Morea is a contemporary account of Frankish feudal life transposed onto foreign soil. It describes clashes, conquests, and ransoms between the Franks and Byzantines, as well as their alliances and arranged marriages. A rich source, the Chronicle of Morea brims with anecdotes giving insight into the operation of feudal justice, the role of noble women in feudal society, the practice of chivalry, and the conduct of warfare. Versions of the Chronicle exist in Aragonese, Greek, and Italian, as well as in Old French. However, this is the first translation into English or any other modern language of the Old French text, thus opening its content to a wider audience.
