"Are you afraid?" Making friends isn't easy, Allan realizes, especially when you're the new kid in town. Since moving to Ocean View, Allan has spent most of his time alone, out at Silver Lake, watching the geese and the beautiful, graceful white ducks he calls snowbirds. So Allan is grateful when Tony and Pete let him hang out with them. Until the day they start throwing rocks at the birds, and daring Allan to hit one. "What are you, afraid?" they tease. "Maybe we just won't call you anymore. You're scared to do anything." Allan wants to belong, but will he have to attack the birds to prove himself? And is it worth it?--Back cover.

2011 Paterson Prize for Books for Young People, Honor Book Bullies made Andrew's whole seventh-grade year a nightmare. Bullies forced Jaevon to change schools and get into fights. Emily's "friends" picked at her until she was a carcass. From all kids of backgrounds, kids and grownups talk openly about their experiences of being bullied. Their honest, moving stories will resonate with the many children who have undergone bullying of all kinds - emotional and physical - and who have tried to deal with it alone or with help. Arresting photos by Steven Vote draw us into the lives of these brave people.

Helen Carmichael Porter has been touring her stories about victims and bullies for over seven years. The stories in The Bully and Me are first person accounts by both victims and bullies. The victims try to change the situation and usually, but not always, succeed. The stories are descriptive narratives of what happens to real people. They are based on Porter's observations, countless interviews, personal experience, and imagination. The book explores the idea that victims and bullies are two sides of the same coin and that the healing of both lies in dealing with this paradox. There is not a lot of real violence in these stories; there is some, and much of it is implied in threats, taunts, gossip, e-mails, gestures, and language. Most of the bullying is teasing and it is always designed to torment and ridicule. The Bully and Me also refers to biblical and folk tales in the comments showing how bullying is not a new problem. This is not a self-help book; it is about listening to and thinking about the stories of bullying that happen everyday in our homes, our schools, and our communities.

Everything and everybody we encounter in life shape us and influence us to a certain degree. In my case, the usual suspects applyfamily, coworkers, friends, and acquaintancesas well as people whom Ive only briefly interacted with or seen in the street. Ive also been influenced by a myriad of experiences relating to home life, work, commuting, hobbies, vacations, and leisure time. Current affairslocal, regional, national, and globalhave also shaped me during my fifty-odd years upon this earth. My acquisition of a religious faith during my later years has also had a profound influence upon mea very positive influence. Physical health problems that have dogged me on and off since early childhood have also had a profound influence upon mea very negative influence. However, there remains one elephant in the room: bullies.

I think most of us have been bullied at one time in our life or another. I believe there were times we may not have realize we were being bullied! If we were not being hit or yelled at we were not being bullied. Not true! Have you ever had something gnaw away at you in the pit of your stomach and you did not know what it was? I have. Have you ever been left out of a conversation not only when you were young but now as adults? It hurts and is so uncomfortable. Have you ever been laughed at and to you for no reason at all? Have you ever had people just look down at you? Have you ever had people make you feel worthless without having to say anything? Has anyone ever teased you until it hurt? Yes, these are all forms of bullying. Have you ever yelled at your children and I don't mean just normal mom and dad discipline? Have you said things you should not have and did not realize it was emotional abuse to your children? The things that I have heard parents say are stupid and shut up. That is just a couple things. Think about it and then apologize to your children - no matter how old or young they are! Just love them! If any of the above sounds familiar, you are a bully! That is right! Re-read the bad feelings above and if you have done that to anyone you know, well maybe you need to tell them just how sorry you are! This goes for bosses also! Being a boss does not give you the right to be a bully! If you think you will get a better employee that way you are so wrong!

In today’s headlines, there have been incidents involving harassment of children and teens directly related to vicious, homophobic, cyberspace, racial, and other forms of bullying. The pain, anguish, and heartbreak of bullying victims can be overwhelming. Even supposedly mature politicians, religious leaders, and others are vociferous in a homophobic and vitriolic tone toward anyone with different lifestyles or points of view. Easily influenced children and teens hear these confusing tones of discord and may likely soon emulate in some unhealthy manner.
