The festivals of the 'four months' (caturm sa) stand apart from other festive occasions in Kathmandu (Nepal) in their overriding concern with death. These festivals are sacrificial feasts, dealing with the riddle of life and death in the Hindu-Buddhist context of South Asia. Caturmasa festivals are collective, supralocal affairs, crossing the border between the upper and the lower part of the town; they involve the whole town of Kathmandu, and the king of Nepal, who is both sacrificer and victim. The two main themes of the celebrations of death are sacrifice and kingship.

Lorenzo Lotto's Portrait of Andrea Odoni is one of the most famous paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Son of an immigrant and a member of the non-noble citizen class, Odoni understood how the power of art could make a name for himself and his family in his adopted homeland. Far from emulating Venetian patricians, however, he set himself apart through the works he collected and the way he displayed them. In this book, Monika Schmitter imaginatively reconstructs Odoni's house – essentially a 'portrait' of Odoni through his surroundings and possessions. Schmitter's detailed analysis of Odoni's life and portrait reveals how sixteenth-century individuals drew on contemporary ideas about spirituality, history, and science to forge their own theories about the power of things and the agency of object. The etchings of the Italian printmaker, architect, and antiquarian Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–78) have long mesmerized viewers. But, as Victor Plahte Tschudi shows, artists and writers of the modern era found in these works—Piranesi’s visions of contradictory space, endless vistas, and self-perpetuating architecture—a formulation of the modern.
