Excerpt from Atheism and Theism A conviction of the Divine existence is wrought in the mind by an Observation of nature, and is a necessary conclusion from a consideration Of our own being. I am, and therefore thou must be, is a just inference from a settled fact, and one which commends itself to the judgment Of every re ecting mind. I have not, therefore, entered into any elaborate argument to disprove the atheistic assump. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Written by Annie Besant, My Path to Atheism is one of the most well known works of this notable British writer and women's rights activist. In this collection of essays written over a five-year period, Besant traces her path to atheism while simultaneously outlining her theosophist philosophies. The first essay presented in this collection, On the Deity of Jesus of Nazareth was written before Besant had officially parted with the Church of England. It is a signpost marking the author's final split with Christianity, and is an appropriate first essay in this book. The essay relies heavily on the author's knowledge of the stories of The Bible, as she displays what she interprets as weaknesses in the story of Jesus. Many of the essays in this collection are written in a similar vein to the first. Besant was clearly a scholar of the Bible, and she is thus able to form compelling arguments against many of the stories and theories of Christianity. Later essays see Besant writing persuasively against religious education and blind faith in a set of religious values. On the Nature and the Existence of God is perhaps the most important essay of the collection, in which the author most clearly outlines her argument for atheism. "We know nothing beyond Nature," Besant states, "We judge of the future by the present and the past." My Path to Atheism is an essential work by one of the most noted atheists of the early twentieth century. Those willing to invest time and effort into this collection will undoubtedly be influenced in one direction or another by its arguments. This is a worthwhile read for both believers and atheists alike, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Bible Defended and Atheism Rebuked: Reply to Robert G. Ingersoll's Lectures, "Mistakes of Moses," "Skulls," Etc., "What Must We Do to Be Saved?" Etc No apology is needed to those who reverence the Bible as the Word of God, for this attempt to defend that Word and to confute the sophistry of one whose life is spent in laborious efforts to impeach and vilify the Divine oracles. Oi the entire sympathy of such there is no reason to doubt. Those who have not adopted as yet that Holy Book as the Divine guide of life, but who value the safety and happiness of mankind, we point to the public avowal by Mr. Ingersoll of his sympathy with Socialists and Nihilists who would subvert all law and order and convulse the world by wholesale murder and crime. In this connection we refer them to his confession, My sympathies cluster around the point of the dagger, etc., as collated in the following pages. The Atheist's Bible

The Atheist's Bible

A comprehensive biography of the Treatise of the Three Impostors, a controversial nonexistent medieval book. Like a lot of good stories, this one begins with a rumor: in 1239, Pope Gregory IX accused Frederick II, the Holy Roman Emperor, of heresy. Without disclosing evidence of any kind, Gregory announced that Frederick had written a supremely blasphemous book—De tribus impostoribus, or the Treatise of the Three Impostors—in which Frederick denounced Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad as impostors. Of course, Frederick denied the charge, and over the following centuries the story played out across Europe, with libertines, freethinkers, and other “strong minds” seeking a copy of the scandalous text. The fascination persisted until finally, in the eighteenth century, someone brought the purported work into actual existence—in not one but two versions, Latin and French. Although historians have debated the origins and influences of this nonexistent book, there has not been a comprehensive biography of the Treatise of the Three Impostors. In The Atheist’s Bible, the eminent historian Georges Minois tracks the course of the book from its origins in 1239 to its most salient episodes in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, introducing readers to the colorful individuals obsessed with possessing the legendary work—and the equally obsessive passion of those who wanted to punish people who sought it. Minois’s compelling account sheds much-needed light on the power of atheism, the threat of blasphemy, and the persistence of free thought during a time when the outspoken risked being burned at the stake.

In this book Phillip E. Johnson and John Mark Reynolds welcome the debate the New Atheists are stirring up and castigates our universities for squashing public debate about the place of faith in all knowing in the name of a false science. They argue for the reasonableness of Christian claims to take a place at the table of public debate and evaluate the strengths of arguments for atheism or naturalism. Ultimately they encourage us to ask the right questions and follow the evidence where it leads.
