Excerpt from The Bible History of the Holy Land The History of the Hebrew people, may be most conveniently commenced with the call of Abraham, which, according to Hales, took place in the year of the world 3258, after the deluge 1062 years, and 2153 years before the birth of Christ. The ages which had passed since the deluge, concurring with the still long duration of human life, had again replenished with people the regions around the original seats of the human race. That great event, the confusion of tongues, which occurred 600 years after the deluge, must have greatly accelerated, and even compelled, more energetic movements than had previously taken place. The descendants of Shem appear to have extended themselves gradually over the regions east and north-east of the river Tigris; the children of Japhet spread themselves into Asia Minor, whence it was their ultimate destination to be impelled into Europe, and to fill the length and breadth of that continent. The posterity of Ham remained in chief possession of Mesopotamia; they also formed settlements at the head of the Persian Gulf, in Arabia, and in Canaan; they established empires in Assyria and Egypt; and, as their numbers multiplied, they advanced into Ethiopia, and other remoter parts of the African peninsula. See note at end of the chapter. The history of Japhet srace is a blank in the early accounts of the Scriptures; and that of Shems is little more. The sacred historian confines his notice to one family of Shems descendants; and the intercourse of that family with the races of Ham, is the circumstance which evolves far more information concerning their early history and condition than we possess concerning any of the other descendants of Noah. From all that history tells, they appear to have been the first authors of the arts of civilisation and social life. But, remembering the other races of which authentic history takes no occasion to speak, this need not be positively affirmed. That, however, very important advancements had, even in this remote age, been made by the posterity of Ham, appears very plainly in the early intercourse of the Hebrew patriarchs with Egypt. A division of the posterity of Canaan, the youngest son of Ham, left the Arabian shores of the Red Sea, and settled in the country whose history we have undertaken to write;. and they gave to it the name of their father, from whom also they are, collectively, called Canaanites. Excerpt from Holy Land and Holy Writ There is no originality in this linking together of the Bible and Palestine on our title page. It has been gracefully done by both Thomson and Geikie. In fact it can hardly be avoided; for the book, to be understood, must be illustrated by the habits of the people among whom it was written, and to be beautiful, must be illustrated by the vistas of Palestine's moun tains, plains, and waters; and on the other hand, the land would be a most unprofitable one for the traveler in saddle or in spirit, without its life history and without the halo that Scripture hangs around it. Excerpt from The Holy Land in Geography and in History, Vol. 1 What is needed is a good Geography of the Holy Land and a Biblical History for practical every-day use. There are numerous histories of Israel and of the time of Christ, but they are voluminous and costly works. The ordinary maps of Palestine, the limited number in our teachers' Bibles, or the folded ones in books of travel, do not meet the want. They either are not adapted to the period under consideration, or they contain so much and so many details as to be confusing, or they are too large for practical purposes, and ill adapted for use in teaching. The Geography should be based upon the results of an actual survey. It should present the natural features of the land in a plain and attractive manner, showing especially those things which the ordinary reader of the Bible most often wishes to find. With this should be an identification, as far as known, of the Biblical sites. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from New Light on the Bible and the Holy Land: Being an Account of Some Recent Discoveries in the East In consequence of the constant accessions to our knowledge which follow the arrival of new materials and the interpretation of materials already acquired, every decade and even every year must throw new light, if only a few dim rays, on some corner of the vast field of Biblical research. Thus, during the last ten years the study of the monuments discovered by M. De Sarzec have already taught us something about the earliest civilization of the district from whence Abraham, according to the Book of Genesis, migrated to the land of Canaan: about the state of the arts, and incidentally about the religious and political condition of that region at a very remote period. The subsequent excavations of M. Dieulafoy have added much to our knowledge of the architecture of the Achaemenian period in Persia, and of the minor arts which accompany that principal branch of art; at the same time the recon struction, which is now possible, of the dwelling of Xerxes and Artaxerxes, the remains of which have been laid bare by the French expedition, illustrates those passages in the Bible which refer to Shushan the palace, and is of much general interest on that account. Excerpt from The Holy Land and the Bible, Vol. 1: A Book of Scripture Illustrations Gathered in Palestine I must urge it in explanation of my adding to the already copious literature treating, from one aspect or another, of the Holy Land, that the aim I have had in view in writing this book has been different from that of nearlyr every other work on Palestine, and that, if I have been able to carry it out successfully, the result should unquestionably prove very useful.
