Who is the greatest ever footballer? Pele? Maradona? Cruyff? Who is the greatest ever British footballer? Charlton? Best? Dalglish? Who is the country's greatest defender, midfielder, goalkeeper? What are the greatest teams fielded by every club in the English and Scottish leagues? And what is the greatest international team of all time? How do you decide? Well, the facts don't lie. Based on a unique and comprehensive network of national and international football databases, compiled by football statisticians across the globe, each player is awarded points (for games played for both club and country) according to a series of criteria, such as win, lose, draw, whether they scored, goals conceded, captaincy, etc. Points accumulated for each game are also weighted in line with the competition in which the game featured and the quality of the opponents played. Each player's points are then fed through to the Greatest Ever compilers who update their lists on a weekly basis. The end result is the only objective, comprehensive and incontrovertible record of who are the greatest talents ever to have graced the beautiful game.

THE BEST reveals how the most incredible sportspeople in the world get to the top and stay there. It is a unique look at the path to sporting greatness; a story of origins, practice, genetics and psychology. Packed with gripping personal stories and interviews with top athletes including Elena Delle Donne, Pete Sampras, Joey Votto, Steph Curry, Kurt Warner and Premier League superstars Marcus Rashford and Jamie Carragher, it explains how the best athletes develop the extraordinary skills that allow them to perform remarkable feats under extreme pressure. Gary Lineker is a former English professional footballer who spent most of his career playing as a striker for Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nagoya Grampus Eight. Born in Leicester in 1960, Lineker started his football career at the age of 16 when he joined his hometown club Leicester City. He quickly rose through the ranks, making his first-team debut in 1979 and scoring his first goal in the same match. Over the next few years, Lineker established himself as one of Leicester's most talented players and was eventually named their player of the year in 1983. After a successful season with Leicester, Lineker was sold to Everton for a then-British transfer record fee of £800,000. He performed outstandingly for Everton, leading the team to win the FA Cup in 1984 and to become the league's top scorer in the following season. After three seasons at Everton, Lineker was sold to Barcelona where he continued his impressive goal-scoring form, scoring 42 goals in 103 appearances. In 1989, Lineker returned to England to join Tottenham Hotspur where he remained until his retirement in 1994. Apart from his successful club career, Lineker also had a glittering international career with the England national team, scoring 48 goals in 80 appearances. After retiring from football, Lineker has worked as a television presenter and pundit.
