Emblematic Strategies in Pre-Raphaelite Literature

Emblematic Strategies in Pre-Raphaelite Literature

In this book, Heather McAlpine argues that emblematic strategies play a more central role in Pre-Raphaelite poetics than has been acknowledged, and that reading Pre-Raphaelite works with an awareness of these strategies permits a new understanding of the movement’s engagements with ontology, religion, representation, and politics. The emblem is a discursive practice that promises to stabilize language in the face of doubt, making it especially interesting as a site of conflicting responses to Victorian crises of representation. Through analyses of works by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Christina Rossetti, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Gerard Manley Hopkins, A.C. Swinburne, and William Morris, Emblematic Strategies examines the Pre-Raphaelite movement’s common goal of conveying “truth” while highlighting differences in its adherents’ approaches to that task.

As far as understanding Paul’s writing, there is no book that is more complete and comprehensive than this one. If you have ever been frustrated or uninterested while reading the books of Paul, you are not alone. Unfortunately, most saints in our day know very little of Paul’s writings. They can quote some common verses, but they know little of the doctrines contained within its pages. If you are like most, you wish you knew the Bible better and how to use it to support the doctrines of the church today. If you understand what Paul is talking about, you can do just that. Once the doctrines have been noted, the verses become very clear and are incredibly enlightening. The doctrines of grace, faith, and works are clearly defined and explained. He describes how there cannot be one without the others. The sacredness of marriage and baptism, where we came from, and gifts of the Spirit are clearly explained as well. He teaches us about the Savior, why he came, why the Law of Moses was instituted, and how the Law was fulfilled. He is a witness of Christ, and exemplifies the character traits of the Savior. It is wonderful to see the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ unfold within Paul’s unique writing style. Once a person understands what Paul is speaking of, they will begin to see the church in our day. All the problems are the same. All the doctrines of today’s church are the same. A person doesn’t need to understand a different culture to see how Paul’s writings apply to us. His writings are truly “another witness of Jesus Christ.” As you read, study and reference this commentary, you will certainly come to love Paul’s inspired counsel to the Saints of God.
