Excerpt from The Attitude of the Greek Tragedies Toward Nature Alex. V. Humboldt's views are given in his Cosmos, vol. II., p. 7. In Greek antiquity we find the tenderest expression of a deep feeling for nature mingled with poeti cal presentations of human passion but such descriptions Of nature are merely secondary, because in Greek art everything, so to speak, moves in the circle Of human life. Nature-poetry, as a special branch of literature, was wholly foreign to the Greeks; landscape with them appears only as the background Of a picture, in front of which move human forms. The Greek, according to v. Humboldt, possessed a deep feeling for nature, but lacked the active consciousness which prompts men to express that feeling in words.' Excerpt from Athenian Tragedy: A Study in Popular Art A note on page 284 mentions a few of the available translations of the three tragedians. N o bibliography is attempted; the footnotes refer merely to books or arti cles from which a passage or an idea is taken, or with which I do not agree. I wish to thank especially my colleague, Mr. Jack Randall Crawford, for helpful criticism and suggestions on the earlier chapters, and my friend, Professor Clarence H. Young of Columbia University, for like assistance on the entire book, which he was good enough to read or listen to at different stages. Excerpt from A Guide to the Reading of the Greek Tragedians: Being a Series of Articles on the Greek Drama, Greek Metres, and the Canons of Criticism In this Manual it has been the object of the Editor to bring together, from various sources, information both interesting and useful to the Student on the several heads of the Greek Drama, Greek Metres, and Canons of Criticism. On the first head, extracts have been given from Bentleys Dissertation on Phalaris, as the chief authority for the age of Thespis and the origin of Tragedy and Comedy; care having been taken to divest them of such controversial allusions and digressions as might embarrass the reader in his investigations. These extracts are succeeded by others from various authors, on the Progress of the Drama, the History and comparative Merits of the principal Tragic and Comic Writers, and the Construction of the Greek Theatre. On Greek Metres, the Editor had prefixed an Introduction to his edition of the Hecuba of Euripides, which he had been frequently requested to publish in a separate form, for the purpose of reference in the reading of Greek Plays generally.
