Excerpt from The Atlantic Coast Triassic Coal Field These southern coal areas lie in the Piedmont district, midway between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a region of little relief, easily traversed in any direction by roads and railways, and having on its caste1n border 1eady access to tide water by means of the James and ('ape Fear rivers. The productive tracts occur in two well-marked belts in Virginia and North Carolina, with an intermediate tract in Virginia. These belts extend for about 250 miles in a southwesterly direction, over an area nearly 100 miles wide. The eastern belt includes the Taylorsville and Richmond areas in Virginia, and the Deep Riv er area in North Carolina. The western belt includes the Dan River area. Between them lies the Farmville area in Virginia. The areas in Virginia will first be described, then those in North Carolina.
