Human Proportions for Artists is a profusely illustrated reference book. It is intended for colege level students and serious artists. Avard Fairbanks made a proportion study of more than 100 measurements on each of 25 male and female adults. Detailed drawings were made illustrating these dimensions, including front and lateral fine features of the faces. Anatomical and anthropometric features are included and explained. These measurements are tabulated in life size and in different ratios from heroic, 3/2, to 1/12th life size in twelve columns. A presentation of relative proportions, using Leonardo da Vince's system, is included. This book is intended as an assistance for creating fine realistic and representational art, includ-portraits, from monumental to miniature sizes.

"This new edition combines the 1892 reprint of Dr. Schadow's work which was originally designed to supplement the studies of his students at the Royal Academy of Art in Berlin, with a new translation of the forward [sic] to the 1892 reprint by Ernst Wasmuth, a translation of Dr. Schadow's original introduction and supplemental copies of prints by Bernhard Siegfried Albinus whose work formed the basis for Dr. Schadow's studies of bones and muscles. The work was originally titled Lehre von dem Knochen and Muskeln von den Verhaeltnissen de Menshlichen Koerpers und von den Verkuerzungen."--Page 4 of cover.

One of the few available guidebooks of its kind, this manual approaches figure drawing from the draftsman's point of view. With a clear focus on surface lines and prominences, step-by-step instructions and over 300 illustrations guide artists in accurately sketching all aspects of the human form in lively action and repose. Beginning with method and proportion, the author discusses the drawing of lines, contours, planes, masses, and rounded forms. Moving on to the individual parts of the body, simple principles of anatomy are applied to demonstrate techniques for sketching the head and neck, the trunk, the upper and lower limbs, and the digits. Expertly rendered figures are shown in various positions and movements, and from all angles, for the most thorough, concise instruction. Brimming with the basic elements necessary for creating quality works of art, Figure Drawing also includes guidance for drawing drapery, revealing the main points of support on the body and the proper way to sketch the folds and forms of garments. Immensely practical and highly readable, it is a manual that artists of every level will turn to again and again.
