Excerpt from The Art and Craft of Printing Except in the case of Blunt's Love Lyrics, The Nature of Gothic, Biblia Innocentium, The Golden Legend, and The Book of Wisdom and Lies, a few copies of all the books were printed on vellum. The six copies of The Glittering Plain were printed on very fine vellum obtained from Rome, of which it was impossible to get a second supply as it was all required by the Vatican. The vellum for the other books, except for two or three copies of Poems by the Way, which were on the Roman vellum, was supplied by H. Band of Brentford, and by W. J. Turney Co. Of Stourbridge. There are three complete vellum sets in existence, and the extreme difficulty of completing a set after the copies are scattered, makes it unlikely that there will ever be a fourth. The black ink which proved most satisfactory, after that of more than one English firm had been tried, was obtained from Hanover. William Morris often spoke of making his own ink, in order to be certain of the ingredients, but his intention was never carried out. Excerpt from A Royal Craft: Being Notes on the History Progress of Printing Progress? In our public elementary schools we teach the history of our own and other countries of the. World. We teach also, but somewhat imperfectly, of the rise, progress, and history of that art which has not only made history, but has made also for liberty of thought and the elevation of humanity. With the advent of the press has dawned a higher civilization, and a. Finer sentiment with more artistic aims. The rude and crude productions of Gutenberg and Caxton have gone ever onward from their inception. Until they have developed into a mighty creative and educative force. The printer is no longer an artist-labourer, neither is he a live machine putting mechanically into operation ideas and methods which obtained generations ago. Synchronously with the mould ing of the national character and his pioneership of civilization the printer has improved himself. Excerpt from Printing in Relation to Graphic Art It is not the purpose of this book to try to establish a claim for printing that it is an art. It is hoped that it may show that the princi ples, of art may be applied to printing, and that such application may lead to improvement in some essentials of printing. Thanks are due to several experts in print ing who have read the proofs, and have given wise and acceptable counsel. I desire to acknowledge that aid has been freely sought from books upon art, and that in some instances forms of expression have been adopted from them. No originality is claimed for the allusions to art, nor for art terms and formulas employed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Art of Printing Whether my views are right or wrong respecting the orthography, punctuation, and the capital letters of the Bible, rests with the public to determine. I cannot consent to give an opinion in favour of the changes that fashion, prejudice, or even the rules of grammar have introduced, which are now adopted in general writing, until we have another authorized version of the Bible, but think the more literally we copy the present the better, otherwise the discrepancies will soon be notorious.
