Excerpt from The Ancient British Drama, Vol. 1 of 3 Tun present Publication is intended to form, with 7714! British Drama, and Shakapcare, a complete and uniform Collection, in Ten Volumes, of the best English Plays. The distinction of Ancient and Modem will be found to consist chiefly in reference to their having lost or retained possession of the Stage. Hamlet and Macbeth, for example, cannot, in this sense, be termed ancient Plays, although prior in date to many, or indeed to most of those which will be found in the following Volumes. It is unnecessary to inform the lovers of the Drama, that although the later and more fashionable department of the Collection will be found most useful to the frequenters of the Theatre, yet that which we are now prefacing will be the most acceptable to the admirers of poetry. From the latter end of the sixteenth century to the breaking out of the civil war, the best Poets of England were engaged in dramatic composition; and Dnn'ron and spencer are the only authors of eminent reputation, who have not written for the Stage. Excerpt from A Select Collection of Old English Plays, Vol. 3: Originally Published by Robert Dodsley in the Year 1744; Now First Chronologically Arranged, Revised and Enlarged With the Notes of All Commentators and New Notes I have not been able to discover who was the author of this piece. But I think it is one of the most remarkable of our ancient moralities, as it was wrote purposely to vindicate and promote the Reformation. It was printed in 1573, and contrived so that four people might act it; this was frequently done for the convenience of such as were disposed to divert or improve themselves, by representing these kinds of entertainments in their own houses. [The authorship of "New Custom" remains undiscovered. It is a piece which may have been written a few years before it was printed, and is one of the dramatic efforts in furtherance of the Reformation. At the same time, there is no apparent foundation for the hypothesis that the morality was in existence any great length of time before the date of publication.] About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The British Drama, Vol. 1: Comprehending the Best Plays in the English Language; Tragedies Having thus vindicated the superior excellencies of the modern drama against the boasted claims of Greece, it would be agreeable to the tenor of the editor's plan, and the objects he has in View, to shew, that Britain pos sesses as decided a pre-eminence, in this branch of literature, over contempo rary nations, as she does over remote antiquity. An examination into the state of the various theatres of Europe would incontestably prove the truth of this remark. But, as our right to the dramatic palm has never been disputed, such an inquiry seems unnecessary. It remains, therefore, to explain the mo tives, which led the editor to the present undertaking.
