This is not the only case, within my own practice, in which the arsenical solution has been attended with success; but in consequence of the injurious effect which this medicine often produces on the stomach, and on the nervous system in general, I should certainly never have recourse to it until the other remedies which have been recommended had been tried, and repeatedly tried, without avail. OF LOCAL NEURALGIA. The cases which I have already given, in the course of the work, of painful affections produced by local irritating causes, such as the pressure of a portion of gold upon the nerve of a tooth which had been filled--or of exostosis at the extremity of the root--will at once illustrate the interest which this disorder possesses in relation to the diseases of the teeth. In addition to these, I have to add some others of a similar kind, which equally bear upon the subject in hand, and prove how remotely the effects are sometimes felt, of the most simple and apparently trifling causes. The two following are of this character. In May, 1827, Mr. D., a gentleman about fifty years of age, applied to me in consequence of severe pain occurring in irregular paroxysms, first attacking the ear, and from thence darting down the neck and shoulder, and through the whole length of the arm, so as considerably to diminish the power of the hands and fingers. He had been for more than a year the subject of this affection; and had, latterly, consulted a physician of the highest character, who, finding that the medical treatment which he recommended had failed to produce the slightest relief, requested me to see him.
