Excerpt from The Analysis of Fuel, Gas, Water and Lubricants The present edition has been expanded somewhat to admit of its being used as a text by students in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in their Junior year. It is believed that the added material will still leave the work well adapted to the chemical status of students in Mechanical Engineering. For such students it is well to begin with the topic of Boiler Waters, since this serves as an excellent medium for reviving their elementary chemistry. For such students it will be found desirable also to devote two or three periods to a review of such topics as nomenclature, especially that relating to acids, bases and salts, also valence, reactions, solubilities, and a simplified arrangement of the periodic table which will set forth these properties for about 16 or 18 of the more common elements. This will include practically all of the chemical considerations likely to be met with in the study of boiler waters. It will have the further advantage of connecting many chemical facts with a topic of immediate interest to the engineer, and in such a manner as incidentally to advance him materially in the matter of his chemical information. The author is under special obligation to Floyd B. Hobart for his very efficient help in preparing the manuscript for the printer. He wishes also to express his appreciation for helpful suggestions and careful reading of the text by Dr. T. E. Layng and Dr. M. J. Bradley, also to Dr. R. E. Greenfield for reviewing the text on Boiler Waters and to J. M. Lindgren for helpful suggestions on methods for fuels and oils. Criticisms and suggestions from users will be especially welcome. Excerpt from Gas and Fuel Analysis for Engineers: A Compend for Those Interested in the Economical Application of Fuel The study Of flue-gas analysis enables the engineer to investigate the various sources of loss; and if this compend stimulates and renders easy such investiga tion, the writer's purpose will have been accomplished. The necessary apparatus can be obtained from the leading dealers in New York City. The author wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to our former Professor of Analytical Chemistry, Dr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Fuel, Water and Gas Analysis: For Steam Users Team-users have shown a tendency in the past to neglect the boiler-house for the engine-room, and have concentrated their efforts for the improvement of the efficiency of the plant almost exclusively upon the latter. A study of the losses incurred during the conversion of the thermal energy stored in coal into the thermal energy of steam, will show that it is in the boiler-house that the greater preventable losses are occurring, and that the ratio may be expressed by the numbers 25 and 5. It is however, now beginning to be recognized that a scientifically managed boiler-house is a sine qua non for the economic generation of steam power, and considerable attention is being given by steam-engineers to this portion of their power generating plant. Excerpt from Methods of Gas Analysis IN publishing my New Methods for the Analysis of Gases, it was not my intention to write a manual of gas analysis, but merely to describe my own re searches and the construction of apparatus. My present plan, however, after ten years' experience and the most varied work with gases and their analysis, is to describe all of the operations which are involved in the analysis of gases with my appa ratus. I have thought to give the book especial value by limiting myself to the description of those methods which, in my opinion, are at the present time the most practical. I have hot endeavoured to give a complete description of all known methods, because the book would then become too bulky to be used as the laboratory guide which it is intended to be. The apparatus devised by Pettersson has been described, because a wholly new principle in the measurement of gases is there brought into use. In the following pages I hope to give a guide to gas analysis by the help of which the various examina tions, even the most difficult, can be carried out. Excerpt from Gas Analysis The separation of the gases of the argon group has not been discussed for the reason that rapid and simple analytical methods for the determination of these several gases have not as yet been perfected.
