Excerpt from The Agricultural Economy and Trade of Denmark Denmark, generally self - sufficient in principal foods, imports feed grains, oilseeds and oils, and tropical products. The United States continues to be the major source of agricultural goods to Denmark, supplying about 25 percent of Danish agricultural im ports in normal years. Soybeans and tobacco are the principal commodities purchased by Denmark from the United States. Agricultural exports continue to be heavily dominated by pork products and butter. Trade has been concentrated in two major markets, the United Kingdom, a European Free Trade Association (efta) partner, and West Germany, a member of the European Economic Community (eec). High tariff walls imposed by the eec since 1962 have contributed significantly to declines in Danish exports to the eec of poultry, eggs, beef, veal, and live animals. Denmarkis attempting to improve agricultural export prospects by diversifying markets. Denmark applied for membership in the eec in 1967 but member ship is not anticipated in the near future. Government support to farmers has increased since 1960, as farm revenues have not im proved relative to nonfarm revenues-due to lower overall export earnings and increased costs. Prior to the early l96o's, the Danish farm sector was relatively independent from Government support. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Short Outline of Danish Agriculture Through the Last Generation, Presented to British Journalists on Their Visit to Denmark in August 1919 The time from about 1880 until the outbreak of war in 1914 has for danish agriculture been a period of extraordinary and prosperous development. Before 1880 danish agriculture was mainly producer and seller of corn; but when Americas surplus production of corn in the eighties reached Europe the cornprices fell rapidly and the corn-producing agriculture had to work under very difficult conditions, particularly in Denmark where the chief part of the soil, especially in Jutland but also in parts of the islands, is of so poor a quality that it only yields comparatively small crops. In stead of entering into a - from the outset hopeless - competition against the transatlantic import of corn a happy fate led danish agriculture in the quite opposite direction, and taking advantage first of the supplies of cheap corn and later of oilcakes as raw material a production of refined produces of domestic animals was taken up - especially butter and bacon - which gradually became the speciality of danish agriculture. Excerpt from Danish Agriculture At the same time the number of cattle has been increased as mentioned before. One can also rightly claim that the value of the live stock in the course of 30 years has been increased by and to this must be added the increased value of farm buildings, dea stock, machines, etc., as well as the value of the something like dairies and 43 cooperative bacon factories that have been erected by agriculturists. This development dates from the period about 30 years ago, when the corn prices fell and the economical status of agriculture was less good, if not to say bad. The transition from the sale of corn to the producing of cattle is a very interesting period in the history of Danish agriculture. Excerpt from Report on the Post-War Economic and Industrial Situation of Denmark: Presented to Parliament by Command of His Majesty Before the war each of these two distinct parts of Denmark had reached a definite stage in economic development. Agricultural Denmark, from being a corn producing country, had, within a generation and a half developed into a large factory for the production of butter, bacon and eggs, each of which was produced with an eye to the particular markets for which it was intended. Industrial and commercial Denmark, by reason of the position of the country, had also reached a certain stage of progress as a centre of trade for Northern Europe. Excerpt from The European Free Trade Association Without the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Norway: Implications for Agricultural Exports of the Remaining Efta Countries and the United States Efta differs from.the Common Market in that its nature is purely eco nomic, whereas the goals of the EC are not only economic integration, but ultimately, political integration. Within the economic sphere, efta has sought only to eliminate trade barriers between efta members. It has not pursued the broader goals of an economic and customs union. Thus, efta countries have retained their individual agricultural policies - unlike the ec, there is no common agricultural policy.
