Excerpt from Agricultural Conservation Program: Summaries by States, 1951 The year 1951 was the 16th year of the Agricultural Conservation Program, begun in 1936 as a part of the national effort to main tain and improve farming and ranching resources. Under this program financial assistance is available to all farmers in the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, for carrying out needed conservation practices. The program is a means to stimulate practices which generally are not being carried out to the extent needed to assure the required production for our expanding population. The assistance represents only a portion of the cost of carrying out the practices. The program is authorized under the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act, as amended, and is financed from annual appropriations.
