Covenant Retreat is a special place in the gorgeous mountains of Virginia. There is a very large old Plantation home in the middle of the retreat that has a wonderful balcony overlooking the entire property. A babbling river runs right through the middle of the land and empties into a sparkling pond. Rolling hills of flowers and open fields of hay are all surrounded by a forest of trees. Bentley Bennigan the beekeeper, lives in the big house and sits on his balcony watching over all his treasured creatures. Three red barns are placed around the retreat and the largest one sits on top of the highest hill with a special beehive of honey bees. There are twenty-six bees in this hive that were chosen by the beekeeper because of their great attitudes. Each bee has been given a name by the beekeeper to match his or her special attitude. The bees all work together to help each other and their friends out. These bees are very busy using their gifts to prosper their hive but also work hard to pollinate their beautiful surroundings. As the bees go through their days, they encounter other creatures who struggle with certain issues so they try to help them learn a better way to do things.

It is only in looking back on the thirty-one years since a little boy was born into a loving family that his life could be seen as worthy of being recounted. An amusing little boy with tons of personality and a quirky outlook on life was a true gift from God to his family. He was raised by a mother who would make every effort to mainstream her handicapped child and left no stone unturned to provide opportunities for his development, education, and social acceptance. His early disabilities delayed his development for only a short time as his perseverance and love of life propelled him headlong into life. His observations and prattling nature were a constant source of amusement. He struggled with hearing for his first several years, so he frequently misidentified objects or words until he benefited from repetition. An aunt became a "Miss," and an uncle Greg became "Uncle Larry," solely because he did not fully understand and did not really care. It worked for him, and the family loved it. His quirky nature gave us the name of "Kathy" for his pet lizard. No reason for it: just his bizarre choice. Scotty and his mother Betsy had many challenges during his first ten years of life, which were all handled with courage and a never-submit attitude. Their faith, the love and support of family, and their refusal to be marginalized or isolated provided Scotty with the opportunity to become a productive adult who is now giving back to his community.

The Adventures of the Reptile Kid By: Noel Rawle The adventures of Patti Doherty, AKA “The Reptile Kid,” are teemed with mischief, intrigue, and fool-hardy endeavors. Although his escapades only occurred in three counties in Ireland, his deeds and misdeeds are legendary. His ex-girlfriend often noted that trouble always seem to follow anywhere that reptile dared go. He lived off his wits, reveling in being a walking contradiction to the norm with dating exploits and spiteful quirks, much to his family’s dismay. Yet to some he was seen as a modern day Robin Hood. His cousin, Benefubble, despite his virtuous nature, married The Reptile Kid’s ex-girlfriend and caused a rift between them. However, Benefubble still remained relentless in telling the kid how foolish and convoluted his aspirations were. At times, he even felt like the Sancho Panza to Don Quixote. In the end, it will be the kid’s tortured victim, Mrs. Glynn, who will be his savior.

Arnold Hap Fox tells the story of his adventures with Henry Hawk when they run away from the sixth grade in Cleotis, Indiana, trying to join their fathers in Biloxi on the Gulf. Inspired by Huckleberry Finn, they patch up a derelict canoe to float down the Wabash to the Ohio and then to the Mississippi. Cap'n Veech warns them, These days Huck's trip couldn't happen. There'd be Amber Alerts and squads of social workers on his tail to bring him back home and put him in counseling. Wouldn't get much past Paducah. Hap and Henry with Hap's dog Shep nearly drown, wash up in Kentucky, and begin hiking. Henry is a talented liar. Hap is more innocent and imagines the dangers ahead. They are arrested for vagrancy, thrown in jail, and wind up in protective custody on a farm where Augusta and Arbutus Gorch are experienced foster parents. Ignoring warnings about bears and snakes, Henry insists they run away to head south. After three nights in Bobcat Woods, Hap decides he isn't cut out to be an explorer. He is happy to hole up at Eve's Orchard, a floundering commune, that keeps afloat selling goat cheese and marijuana. From his reading about motherless boys, Hap worries that he will receive his comeuppance for his rebellion, but he cannot imagine what that comeuppance will be. Along the way he learns that he is more comfortable at home in his bed instead of playing Daniel Boone. He also finds out that even when adults are confused, there is more than one kind of family that cares about its children.
