I immediately directed him to bathe them in very cold water, then anoint them with panther's oil, and wrap them up in cotton cloths. After doing this, he was put to bed and required to remain at camp for several days, by which time he fully recovered. One of these days, Stanislaus and I went out on a short hunt, but were overtaken by a dreadful storm, and compelled to take shelter for the night under a pine-tree. We built a rousing fire, and lay down to sleep; but in the course of the night I awoke, and finding the weather very severe and Stanislaus suffering from cold, I made him take my blanket In addition to his own. As for myself, I coaxed Lady Washington, who accompanied us, as near the fire as possible, and then lay down next her, having her shaggy coat on one side and the fire on the other. It was my first experiment of this kind, and I felt a little fearful for a while of having a troublesome bedfellow; but, being very sleepy, I soon forgot my anxiety in slumber. Once only she rose and withdrew for a few minutes, but soon came back, lapped my hands a moment, and again nestled down in her former position, apparently with the object of getting as close to me as I wished to get to her. It was late the next morning before I waked, when I found my shaggy companion still sleeping, and as calmly and peacefully as could have been desired. In the early part of the winter we also made ourselves snow-shoes, by bending tough pieces of green wood into large bows, and weaving over them strips of green hide.
