Accordingly, his comrade was no sooner out of sight, than he began to dig with his knife all around the stone and succeeded so well, that he got it up, and found beneath it a leathern purse, containing a hundred ducats, and a card, on which was written the followingsentence in Latinz - Who soever thou art who hast wit enough to discover the meaning of the inscription, inherit my money and make a better use of it than I have done: The scholar, rejoicing at his good fortune, placed the stone in its former situation, and walked home to Salamanca with the soul of the licentiate. Excerpt from The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane, Vol. 1 of 2 This delightful novelist was born in a small village, contiguous to the town of Vannes in Brittany; as near as can be ascertained, in the year 1668. His baptismal name, or rather names, were Alain René; he was early left, by the death of his father, to the guardianship of an uncle, who is stated to have ill fulfilled the sacred trust reposed in him; and, but for the compassion of Father Bochard, Principal of the College of Vannes, the educa tion, as well as the little property of his unfortunate ward, would have been utterly neglected. Struck with the docility and talents of the outh, the good Jesuit took pleasure in affording him is gratuitous instruo tions, regretting only that he had not earlier attracted his attention for it would appear that the young Le Sage was still pursuing his philosophical studies, as far on as the year 1693, at Paris.
