Excerpt from The Potpourri, 1934, Vol. 26 The Spanish Department is rapidly increasing in size. Not only is the study of Spanish made interesting by the very capable professor, Miss Corinne Satteier, but the Spanish students have the opportunity of teaching the grammar grade children simple Spanish lessons. Too, the students of the college feel that Spanish, as the modern commercial language, is important. Miss Saucier, head of the department, received her degree in 1922 from Peabody College and her a.m. Degree in 1923. She did graduate study at Sorbonne, Paris, in 1927 and 1928. She attended Columbia in 1930 and 1931 Miss Saucier has been teacher of French in Sr, Gabriel and Bolton High Schools, 1922-1927, and the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota in 1928 and 1929. In 1931 she accepted a position as professor of foreign languages at this institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Third Pot-Pourri I must apologise to the public for the apparent poor ness of idea in again repeating my somewhat tiresome title. I heard Mr. Motley, the historian, once say, a title should be 'telling and selling.' A 'third pot-pourri will very likely turn out to be neither of these, but it seemed to me the most honest title I could think of towards those who were kind enough, not only to read, but to like, my former books. They may find the matter in this book better or worse; the manner is exactly the same as before, and it could hardly be otherwise at my age. Excerpt from Jewel Weed Once in a while, particularly when a man is young or beginning a new phase of life, there come times when the things that are to be seem almost tangible. They press until he feels them crowd, while he waits with tense expectation for them to become visible to the crude eye of outer experience. Perhaps it was due to a certain occultism in the atmosphere that Ellery Norris felt this pressure of the future on the afternoon of Mr. Early's reception to Ram Juna. Norris was a new young man in a new young city, and he had come West to live. However short and futile life may look to the Old, it appears a big and long thing to twenty-three. Here in St. Etienne he was to work and work hard; among these people, now all strangers, he was to find the friends of his lifetime; here were to come all the experiences of struggle, fail ure, success, perhaps of love. The National Book Award–winning novel by the writer whom Fran Lebowitz called “the real F. Scott Fitzgerald” Joe Chapin led a storybook life. A successful small-town lawyer with a beautiful wife, two over-achieving children, and aspirations to be president, he seemed to have it all. But as his daughter looks back on his life, a different man emerges: one in conflict with his ambitious and shrewish wife, terrified that the misdeeds of his children will dash his political dreams, and in love with a model half his age. With black wit and penetrating insight, Ten North Frederick stands with Richard Yates’ Revolutionary Road, Evan S. Connell’s Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge, the stories of John Cheever, and Mad Men as a brilliant portrait of the personal and political hypocrisy of mid-century America. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
