The first classic Catholic translation of the New Testament in English was smuggled into Britain by persecuted Elizabethan Catholics more than four hundred years ago. The original text (very different from Bishop Challoner's substantial revision), has been out of print for nearly a century. It is reissued with a new introduction, in a word-for-word reprint of the first edition, reset in modern type and orthography, enlarged for ease of reading, study and devotion. The 1582 Rheims scrupulously privileged primary sources, principally the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome, according to extant Renaissance manuscripts. It is the neglected magnum opus of the English Counter-Reformation.

This is the original and true Rheims New Testament published by the English College in Rheims in 1582. It has been "lost" for over 400 years due its being in old English. Dr. William G. von Peters has transliterated the text into modern English. Its copious marginal notes and voluminous annotations make it a superb study bible with references from the Apostles, Fathers of the Church and Saints. The Douay Rheims Bible was not produced for sectarian reasons but to present the true Word of God to the English people, and so it is called a "slavish", i.e., literal, translation; rather than one which seeks to sugar coat, gloss over, or hide the real text and meanings. Its copious marginal notes and voluminous annotations explaining the Bible text, make it a superb study bible. It contains references from the Apostles, Fathers of the Church and Saints, giving the text a ready insight into the dogmas and teaching of the Church from the time of Christ to the present.
